Descendants of William Hascall of Fontmell Magna (1490-1542)

This genealogical database, created and maintained by the Haskell Family Association, is based on research and materials gathered by many individuals over the past century. William Haskell served as Churchwarden at the Church of St. Stephen in Charlton Musgrove, England, from 1627 to 1628. He married Elinor Foule in 1611, and they had seven children who were baptized in Charlton Musgrove, Somerset, England. Their three sons, Roger (bp. March 6, 1613/14), William (bp. November 8, 1618), and Mark (bp. April 8, 1621), immigrated to Massachusetts in the New World. Most Haskells in the U.S. are descendants of one of these three brothers.

One of the first books to research the descendants of the three immigrant brothers is Chronicles of the Haskell Family (1943) by Ira J. Haskell (1883-1966). Win Haskell (1923-2015) and his wife, Trudy, researched the Haskell family’s English origins, following Haskell ancestors back to William Hascall of Fontmell Magna (1490-1542), which is where this database begins. Win and Trudy Haskell edited Haskell Family Anthologies (Vol. I and II), and Peter Haskell (1928-2022) published The Haskell Family in the Armed Forces, Vols. I and II.

Marion Anderson (1928-2005), the longtime historian and genealogist for the Haskell Family Association, collected and organized a vast array of genealogical research on the Haskell family. Her successor, David A. Haskell (1928-2022), digitized much of this genealogical material. For the past fifteen years, the current HFA historian and genealogist, Richard K. Hascall, has continued to expand this database, nearly quadrupling its size to over 350,000 names.

The Haskell Family Association publishes the Haskell Journal. Beginning with four issues in 1898 in California, the Haskell Journal was revived by Win Haskell in 1984. Since Issue 81 in 2010, a 28-page, color version of the Haskell Journal has been published three times a year. All past issues of the Haskell Journal, as well as all issues of the Newsletter of the International Haskell Family Society, published in England from 1991 to 2014, are available as PDF files on the Members Only page of the HFA website, http://haskellfamily.org. You can join the Haskell Family Association on that website .
