The origin of the Haskell name is discussed in the book, Haskells in North America - Descendants of William Haskell and Elinor Foule Through Five Gererations, shown on the home page. One of the leading theories discussed in detail in that book is that the name Haskell may well have its origin in “housecarls,” the name that King Canute gave his personal bodyguards about 1016 AD. Royal housecarls in England are well-known for having fought under Harold Godwinson at the battle of Hastings. It is for these reasons that the Haskell Family Association has established the special membership category of Housecarl. The scroll shows the current list of Housecarls.
