582. Joseph Safford

1RootWeb.com, Entry 12040, ID: I02191.
"Joseph came to New England at age 8 with his parents. No record of him is found until May 13, 1667, when he was in Court for striking a John Lighton; his brother John going his bond. He served in King Phillip'sWar under Captain Nicholas Paige and on Sept 3, 1675, was credited with 2 pounds for the expedition to Mount Hope. He served on jury 1676 and 1678; is listed a commoner of Ipswich in 1678; a freeman October 11, 1682; and selectman in 1697. In 1694 and 1695, with a group of Ipswich men, he bought from a Captain Fitch of Norwich, Connecticutt, a tract of l800 acres which later became Preston, Connecticutt. Fitch's title to this land was dubiuos, as in 1675 he held it in trust for a local tribe of Indians to whom it had been guaranteed, but by 1694, these facts seem to have been forgotten. On May 1, 1701, Joseph made a settlement on his property to his two living sons, with payments to the daughters. Daughter Mary was unmarried in 1701. Son Joseph died before 1701. Son Thomas died Jun 1676 in Ipswich, MASS Son Samuel had two wives: Elizabeth and Hannah. Ref; Anc. of PhoebeTilton-WG Davis Some Ancestral Lines-RM Tingley- Ipswich VR[new2001tree.FTW]."
