Beaufort, March 29 – James Moore Rhett died at his home here last night after a long illness. The funeral will be held at Saint Helena Episcopal Church on Friday.

Members of his immediate family are his immediate family are his wife, two daughters, Miss Ruth Rhett and Miss Mary Rhett; two sons, James M. Rhett, Jr., Haskell S. Rhett, all of Beaufort; two brothers, William M. Rhett of Chicago, and Robert M. Rhett of Beaufort.

Mr. Rhett was born in Beaufort in 1860 and lived his live here. For many years Mr. Rhett was magistrate for Beaufort, and was by reason of his judicial temperament and knowledge of the law, an excellent one. Upon the establishment of the State board of fisheries in 1905 he was appointed chairman by Gov. Heyward and was reappointed by Gov. Ansel and served until 1913. Under his careful and wise management the system was put into operation and from the first returned to the State and the counties more revenue than was estimated probable by the legislative commission that recommended establishment of the board. The law was put into operation with such tact and firmness that it was generally observed and served its purpose of protecting the coast fisheries.

In 1914, when Beaufort adopted the commission form of government, Mr. Rhett was elected city recorder by the council and held this office until his death. Last year when the governor appointed the State tax review board he chose Mr. Rhett as its chairman, but ill health compelled a declination of the appointment.

For some 20 years he acted as county chairman in the Democratic party organization, and for perhaps a longer period he was president of the Beaufort Democratic club. In these capacities he spared neither time nor thought in the careful performance of all their duties.

By reason of good judgment and unswerving fidelity to what he believed the fair and right course, his counsel was valued by a circle of close friends, and his presence at party counsels and gathering for the party counsels and gatherings for the consideration of public matters was always a potent influence.
