The regiment did not leave the United States but moved around the Northern and Central  Virginia area in an attempt to beat outbreaks of disease. Typhoid and Malaria being prevalent; it would appear that more men died from disease in the United States than  those killed in action in Cuba. In mid August 1898 the 3rd New York Infantry returned to the New York area and John Courtland Haskell mustered out on 20 August 1898.
