28537. Harry Garner Haskell

Harry Garzer Haskell, son of Samuel and Mary Frances (Amory) Haskell, was born, September 30, I870, in New York City. He was baptized March 14, 1871, in the Church of the Incarnation, New York City. He was educated in private schools and Columbia College School of Mines, graduating in 1893, with the degree of Mining Engineer. Shortly after the completion of his college course, he entered the employ of the Repauno Chemical Company and the Hercules Powder Company, the largest manufacturers of high explosives in the United States. In 1895, Mr. Haskell, then twenty-five years of age, became, treasurer of the Atlantic Dynamite Company upon its formation as a producing organization. He also was elected secretary of the Repauno Chemical Company and the Hercules Powder Company. From that time on he had charge of the manufacturing operations of these and other companies eventually merged, in 1902, with E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. Upon the reorganization of the du Pont Company, Mr. Haskell became director of the High Explosives Operating Department, and continued in that position until after the end of the World War in 1918. During this period, this department, in addition to producing high explosives for domestic use in the United States, was taxed to capacity to supply the Allies and later the United States Government an important proportion of their requirements of war materials, for which great plants had to be built and operated.

Shortly after the beginning of the 'World War in 1914, Mr. Haskell was made a member of the board of directors and of the executive committee, upon which devolved responsibility for conduct of the entire organization. In 1916, Mr. Haskell was elected a vice-president of the company. In 1919 he retired from the operating department and executive committee and was elected to the finance committee, remaining a vice-president and a member of the board of directors. In addition to these business interests he is also a director of several other companies, including Canadian Industries, Limited, and International Mining Corporation, Noranda Mines Limited of Canada, and a former director of the Equitable Trust Company of Wilmington, Delaware. He was a governor of the Society of the Colonial Wars, in Delaware, 1933 to 1938. He is a member of the college fraternity of Delta Psi and of other clubs and organizations, including the St. Anthony Club, the Union Club, the University Club, and the New York Yacht Club, all of New York City; the Rittenhouse Club, of Philadelphia; the Wilmington Club, the Wilmington Country Club, of Wilmington, Delaware. He is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church.

WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 4 - Harry. G. Haskell, a director and former vice president and member of the executive and finance committees of  E. I. du Pont de Nemour &Co., Inc., died in his home here today at the age of 80. He had retired from company activities other than his directorship.

Mr. Haskell had been with du Pont and its affiliates since 1893, starting as a clerk and rising to one of the top positions in the company, In 1911 he became director of the high-explosives operating department, serving until after the end of the first World War in 1918. The department supplied a large proportion of the military explosives required by the Allies.

In 1914 Mr. Haskell became a member of the board of directors and the executive committee. Two years later he was elected a vice president. He retired from the operating department and the executive committee in 1919 and was elected to the finance committee that year, continuing as a vice president and member of the board. He resigned as vice president in April, 1946, and as a member of the finance committee in December, 1946.

He was elected a director of the Delaware Academy of Medicine in 1942. At his death; he was also a director of the International Mining Corporation. At one time he had also been a director of Noranda Mines, Ltd., Canadian Industries, Ltd., and the Equitable Trust Company of Wilmington.
