Vol 5 No 4 December 1996Councillor mourned at Chalbury, 27 October 1972: The funeral of 82-year-old Mr. Ernest Haskell of Pear Tree Cottage, Chalbury, took place on Friday. Born at Woodlands, Mr. Haskell worked in farming and forestry in his younger days, assisting his father with cider-pressing. He still had the old press at the time of his death.
During the First World War he served in India with the Hampshire Regt. and on return from service became the local postman, delivering mail by cycle in the Horton and Chalbury area for over a quarter of a century. Earlier this year he retired from the Horton Parish Council, of which he was chairman 23 ears.
Since 1947 he has represented Horton on the Wimborne and Cranbome Rural Council. Chairman Col. P. J. K. Warren paid tribute to Mr. Haskell's work on the Housing and Finance Committees, saying: (he) "was typical of the real old countrymen of Dorset, born in Woodlands over 80 years ago and lived in the area ever since, ... deeply interested in country affairs. He was interested in the Portman Hunt, for which he was an earth- stopper for a long time, and he followed the hunt in his car until quite recently."
Mrs. J. A. Dunk, a Rural Council member, said that in the 20 years she knew Mr. Haskell she came to appreciate his great knowledge of the countryside and local affairs. He knew every parishioner and often their parents and children.
Chalbury Parish Church was filled for the funeral service. Besides family and friends, the officers and members of Horton Parish Council, Wimborne and Cranborne Rural Council and the Portman Hunt were in attendance. Among the 31 principal mourners, all close family members, were son, Stanley J. Haskell, DSM, and his wife, the late Gladys California Haskell, both long-standing members of the HFS.
