50212. Thomas William Richard Henry Haskell

Newsletter of the International Haskell Family Society
Volume 19, No. 3, September 2010

On a mid-August day in 1920, two able seamen from HMS Warspite were on leave. Thomas Haskell had arrived in Hampton, Middlesex, on Tuesday to visit his friend Frederick Wellington. On Wednesday morning, the two young men - Thomas was 19, Frederick was 20 - went for a swim in the nearby River Thames before breakfast. They were both strong swimmers as you would expect from experienced seamen in the Royal Navy. However, at about half past seven, when they had been in the water some time, tragedy struck. One of the two - accounts differ about which one - became entangled in very thick weeds growing near Platt's Eyot, one of the tiny islands in the river.

There were people working on the coal shoot at the nearby wharf, but it was noisy and only one heard the shout "All right, I'm coming", followed by "Hold up!". The other sailor swam across to his struggling friend, but he too became entangled and was pulled under the water. By this time potential rescuers had been alerted, but it was too late. Both bodies were recovered later that morning covered with weed.

Thomas William Richard Haskell, eldest child of Thomas and Alice Haskell, was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent in 1901, and died August 10th 1920. He was buried in Ladywell Cemetery in South East London, and is named on the War Graves Commission memorial wall there.

Submitted by Veronica Taylor (UK) compiled from The Thames Valley Times August 11th 1920, The Surrey Comet 14th August 1920 and the Richmond and Twickenham Times of the same date.
