Obituary
George Arthur Vincett of Galahad, Alberta was born August 8, 1914 at Grainland, Alberta. He passed away April 7, 2000 in the Daysland Health Care Centre, Daysland, Alberta at the age of 85 years.
His parents were Horace and Beatrice (Haskell) Vincett. The Vincetts and Haskells were early pioneers of the Grainland District and George was born in the sod house on his father's homestead. He was the eldest son in a family of seven boys and five girls.
Children of that era saw many changes as the country developed. The railway was built, the Village of Galahad came into being and George attended the newly built Galahad Consolidated School on its opening day in 1920. He grew up as a farm boy and it was the beginning of a lifelong love of the outdoors and of all things that grew. When schooldays were over he continued to help on the family farm and later worked for neighboring farmers. Several winters were spent working in the Forestburg coal mines.
Most of his life was spent in the Galahad area except for a year and a half when he worked in Vancouver during the Depression and in 1942 when he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. When he returned to civilian life he lived the life of a bachelor farmer for many years. During the winters he continued to work in the mines and, later in the lumber camps.
On March 30, 1968 he married Aileen Fordice, nee Lee. Their son, Ross, was born in 1969. George enjoyed the life of a family man and his four step children became very dear to him. .
George served his community in many ways. He served as an Alberta Wheat Pool Delegate and as a municipal weed inspector. At various times in his life he was active with a number of organizations including the Galahad Legion, the GaIahad Pleasington Unifarm Local and the Galahad Senior Citizens Club.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, floor curling and travel. His enjoyment of his family led to an interest in the extended family, genealogy and family history. Through his membership in family societies he was able to attend family reunions in the United States and England with the last being in 1999.
