Enlisted October 19, 1861 as a private in the First Maine Cavalry. Promoted March 9, 1863 to Quarter Master Sargent and promoted September 3, 1864 to 1st Lt. Begining with Antietam he participated in every major battle fought by the Army of The Potomac up to and including Appomattox.
THE PITTSFIELD ADVERTISER started publication as a four page monthly in April, 1882 by Charles B. Haskell and Orin S. Haskell. It's banner read "DEVOTED TO THE INTERESTS OF THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY". L.O. Haskell took over editorship in 1896. Sold to J.R. Cianchette in 1945. Name changed from Pittsfield Advertiser to Valley Times in September, 1967. Sold to Cianbro Corp in 1972. Moved from Park Street location (right photo), which was the former stables at the Going Hathorn Estate, to the Hunnewell Ave. location (left photo), then moved again in 1980 when Hunnewell Ave building was due for demolition during urban renewal. Merged with Newport Times in 1986 and Sharon Mack becomes editor. Sold to Dexter's Eastern Gazette in 1987 and closed. (Last issue was March 18, 1987.)
