BRIDGTON   Madelyn Elizabeth Buck, 97, of Buck Road in Harrison, passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Bridgton Health Care Center in Bridgton.

Madelyn was born May 23, 1919, on the family farm in Harrison, a daughter of Leland S. and Blanche H. (Haskell) Buck Sr. It was on that family farm where she was not only raised but lived later during her retirement.

She was educated in local schools and was salutatorian of her class at Bridgton Academy in 1937. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts, she earned her teaching certificate from the Gorham Normal School, now called the University of Southern Maine. She later earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maine and a master's degree from Columbia University.

Her teaching career included several memorable opportunities, from teaching her younger sisters, Myrna and Muriel, in a one-room schoolhouse to tutoring wealthy businessmen's children in Venezuela. She spent most of her career in Falmouth, where she had the opportunity to teach upper-level English to students who went on to excel in the Ivy League and other excellent schools. She retired in 1982 to help her aging parents on their farm, and she remained active in her church, the community and the Historical Society for over 30 years, well past her 90th birthday.

Madelyn is survived by three sisters, Miriam, Myrna, and Muriel, as well as by a dozen nieces and nephews and their many, many children.

45765. Leland Stanford Buck Jr.

Leland served as a Second Lieutenant on B-24M #44-41814, 63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cumberland County, Maine prior to the war.

He was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant on May 23, 1944.

Leland was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 crashed in China at 31-36N 122-42E during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on March 9, 1950.

Service # O-832090

The reason he is named on a group headstone is because when soldier's were killed in close proximity to each other they were unable, at that time, to identify them separately and interred their remains together in one grave.

Developed Many Uses

By Charles J. Patterson

Raymond L. Haskell was one of the pioneers in the field of magnesium fabrication and was instrumental in developing processes for the use of that metal in wide applications to the nation's war effort.

His career was ended yesterday by a heart ailment that brought his death at Woman's Hospital.

For many years before his death he was a nationally recognized authority on magnesium casting processes and manager of the Cleveland magnesium sand foundry of American Magnesium Corp, a subsidiary of Aluminum Co. of America.

In 1928, when Alcoa moved the Niagara Falls plant to its operations in Cleveland, Mr. Haskell came here as manager and held that position until his death.
