The Olympian (WA)
March 1, 2007

Stanley Tenney Woodwell, the husband of Thurston County Commissioner Cathy Wolfe, died Monday morning at home in Olympia after a long battle with congestive heart failure. He was 60.

"I was with him the whole time," said Wolfe, his wife of 11 years. Wolfe, a county commissioner since 2001 and a former four-term state legislator, was her husband's prime caretaker for the past six months as his illness progressed into the final stages. She said her husband's illness was diagnosed more than six years ago, but it did not become life-threatening until recent months.

Woodwell, an economic analyst with the state Department of Revenue in Olympia from 1988 to 2003, was a native of Washington, D.C., and grew up in Garrett Park, Md. He left the East Coast to attend the University of Oregon and decided to stay in the area.
"He fell in love with the trees, mountains and rivers of the Pacific Northwest," Wolfe said.
After college, Woodwell took a job as a state economic analyst in Salem, Ore. Then, in 1988, he moved to Washington after he was recruited to work on tax-reform efforts in the administration of then-Gov. Booth Gardner.

He met Wolfe in Olympia in 1996.

In addition to his wife, Woodwell is survived by Wolfe's three daughters; two sisters, Christine Phenix of Arlington, Texas, and the Rev. Sister Anita Woodwell of Llanfrechfa, Wales; a niece and a nephew; and seven grandchildren.
