Carl Sheldon Hopkins:
"During nearly forty years of continuous business intercourse with the people of Brattleboro, Carl S. Hopkins has made a fine reputation as a citizen of ability and high civic worth. With nothing but his own native industry, an unflagging ambition to advance and a complete understanding of his profession, he has steadily forged to the front rank and today is the oldest established and most widely patronized florist of the city. From the beginning of his work here, he displayed a deep interest in the political affairs of the community, ever looking for an opportunity to serve his fellow citizens with unselfish zeal, with a like quality in social and business affairs, and in these last named planes his conduct has been of such nature as to engage the attention and win the respect and esteem of all. To these virtues has been added a natural tendency to mingle fraternally with his fellows, to make friends and hold them by the poser that comes of absolute honesty in every act. None will gainsay the fact that in him, Brattleboro is the home of a citizen to whom all the body politic is proud, with an unquestioned record of patriotism and integrity in every emergency or on any avenue which his feet have trod, during nearly four decades in constructive labor."
He was born in Salem, New York October 2, 1868, a son of Frank W. Hopkins, a native of the same place and a successful farmer, and of Delia E. (Wright) Hopkins of Sandgate, Vermont, both now deceased. His education was obtained in the public schools of Salem, and the Castleton Normal School in this state and at Rochester Business Collegte in Rochester, New York. For four years he was engaged in Rochester in learning the nursery business, coming to Brattleboro in 1892 to establish himself in a like enterprise. From the beginning he was successful, his business being conducted as the corporation of Hopkins The Florist on Main Street, with his greenhouses on Western Avenue. He belongs to Brattleboro Lodge 102, Free and Accepted Masons, Wantastiquet Lodge No. 5, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Protective Grange No. 22, of which he is past Master. Politically he is a Republican. For twenty years he served as member and secretary of the Brattleboro School Board and in 1908 and 1909 was assistant town clerk, since 1910 having been town clerk, also serving as Justice of the Peace since that year. He is a member of the Brattleboro Club, of which he has been secretary, and held the same position in the old Chgamber of Commerce for many years. His church is the Baptist of which he is a Deacon and Trustee. He is a member of the Florists Telegraph Delivery Association of which he served as President.
Carl S. Hopkins married in 1890, Mary H. Haskell of Wilmington, Vermont. Their children are 1. Helen H. 2. Carlotta, 3. C. Warner, who served in the American Expeditionary FRorces during the participation of the United States in the World War, and is now associated with his father in business.""The following taken from Donald Hopkins genealogy:"
"He had generally excellent health. Suffered from cateracts in last years. Cateracts were not removed surgically because of his adverse reaction (hiccups) to previous anesthesia. Also such surgery was a big deal then.
Was a sedsman and started Hopkins the Florist in 1892. In 1908 he became assistant Town Clerk for Brattleboro. In 1911 he was elected as Town Clerk of Brattleboro, Vermont, a position htat included the registration of land deeds. He served until his retirement in 1943. During his tenure he also was the manager of Brattleboro Savingts and Loan Association which shared officeds with the Town Clerk's office (an arrangement that would not be possible in 1955). During his tenure as Town Clerk, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts had longer wait periods for engaged couples than Vermont. As a result, the Clerk of the first town in Vermont above the Massachusetts' border got to perform many marriage ceremonies. He married over 2000 couples.
In 1921 he was President of the Chamber of Commerce. He served as secretary of the Brattleboro School Board for 20 years.
Attended Castleton Normal Schjool in Vermont and the Rochester (NY) Business College.
He married Mary Helen Haskell on Nov 25, 1890 in Wilmington, VT. Mary Helen Haskell was born on Aug 1 1865 in Still River, MA. Died on Dec 31, 1964 in Brattleboro, Windham, Vermont. Buried on Jan 2, 1965 in Brattleboro, Windham, Vermont (Morningside Cemetery). Generally excellent health. Was senile in years immediately preceding death.
