19548. Peter H. Haskell


The following information on Peter Haskell's military history was provided by Winthrop A. Haskell:
Peter served in the Civil War in Company D., 4th Regiment, Maine Infantry Volunteers, then transfered to Company B, New York Infantry. He participated in the First Battle of Bull Run, 21 July, 1861, the first major battle of the Civil War.  He was listed as a "deserter" in July 1862 from hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.  He enlisted in the Navy for one year at Boston in June 1863 and served on the USS Ethan Allen.  He was wounded in the neck by a shell fragment and lost his hearing during heavy bombardment. He was discharged 6 August 1864.  His application for honorable discharge and removal of the desertion charge was denied 29 October 1887.

Solomon Eaton Haskell changed his name to John Reed when he left Deer Isle. He married  May Eaton and had 4 children carrying the Reed surname

MARRIAGE: The Deer Isle town records show two dates for intention of marriage for Solomon Haskell and Margaret Eaton: 12 May 1849 and 21 July 1849. The marriage is recorded as 23 September 1849.


19551. Horace R. Haskell

Horace Haskell served in Company D., 4th Regiment, Maine Volunteers in the Civil War.  He was taken prisoner by Confederate forces in the Battle of Bull Run and poorly treated.  After prisoner exchange he never regained his health and died at the age of 46 on Little Deer Isle. His cemetery stone is reported to read his age as "44 years" and the date of death as 1876.  His cause of death was "disease of the kidneys".

19554. Susan Haskell


Death date is approximated from a letter from William H. Sargent in response to a query on the pension for the dependents of Isaiah V. Eaton. In this letter dated August 29, 1868, Mr. Sargent indicated that Susanah Eaton had remarried, but her husband was widowed with his own family and refused to support his new family. Susanah and her children lived in a separate house with no support. He states that Susanah died the previous winter, and that he was now acting as gaurdian.


Isaiah Valentine Eaton

Isaiah Valentine Eaton was a fisherman. He served in Co. D, 4th Regiment, Maine Volunteers and was killed 18 August 1863 in the Battle of Gettysburg.  He is buried in Gettysburg Memorial Park (information provided by Cindy Beane, August 2008).

Isaiah V. Eaton was a private in Company D, 4th Maine Infantry. Enrolled June 15, 1861.

Wounded at Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He died at Fort Letterman of amputation on August 18, 1863. He was buried at Gettysburg.

Married Susannah Haskell March 6, 1851 at Deer Isle, Maine.

Susannah remarried William Blaster, October 8, 1865.

19556. Cordelia H. Haskell

Cordelia and her friend, Hannah Snowman, with baby Herbert Black were rowing from Little Deer Isle to Pumpkin Island.  The baby started to cry, Hannah was holding him, so Cordelia stood to take him and change places with Hannah.  The boat capsized and Cordelia and the baby were drowned.  Hannah kept afloat by hanging on to an oar.

19560. Sylvanus Green Haskell

Sylvanus Green Haskell was a merchant in a variety store at age 44. He was part owner of the brig "Julia E. Haskell" with John Green Haskell.  The ship was built in 1868 in Deer Isle.

He is reported in Deer Isle town records to have died of Bright's Disease, which in modern terms is called nephritis.


Dorothy Dutton Haskell

The Schooner D.D. Haskell was named after Dorothy Dutton Haskell.


Captain Edward Adams Spear

He was a boot treer, was fenceviewer, constable, and Captain in the Civil War, Co. D 39th Reg. M.V. says his gravestone. Later became Cemetery Superintendent in Quincy.
