Charles Frederick Godfrey

Charles Frederick Godfrey, a resident of Minneapolis since 1983 and a pensioned foreman of the Pittsburgh Coal Company, died last night at the home of Miss Christina Foss, 4129 Fifth street NE. He was 72 years old and had been ill five years.

Born in Seuben, Maine, Dec. 14, 1857, he came to Minneapolis when he was 26 years old.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Pearl E. Davis, and a son, Walter Charles Godfrey, both of Minneapolis; a sister, Mrs. Agnes E. Smith of Steuben, and a grandson, Ralph W. Williamson.

LITTLETON John Henry Kimball Jr., a former town worker who for many decades was an active outdoorsman and athlete, died Sunday, Aug. 29, at his home in Littleton. He was 98.

He was born in Littleton on Jan. 7, 1906, the son of the late John Henry and Nellie Kimball. He attended Littleton schools.

Prior to his retirement at the age of 70, Mr. Kimball worked for the Littleton Highway Department.

Family members recalled his love of nature. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hiking, swimming, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, speed skating and bike riding. He was recalled for being devoted for decades to health and fitness. Even into his 90s, Mr. Kimball would often take a 20-mile bike ride and go for a swim at the lake. His relatives also recall his own health tonic, when he would blend together kelp, fresh fruit, raw eggs and plenty of garlic.

He was also a collector of many things and traveled to flea markets on the weekends.

Mr. Kimball leaves his friend, Ernestine Tomao of Littleton; a nephew, Richard Wile and his wife Jackie of Norfolk; a niece, Drexey Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two great-nephews, Ben Smith of Fla. and Jacob Wile of Peterborough, N.H.; a great-niece, and Katie Johnson of Fla.; and two great-great-nieces Corey and Gracie Johnson.

Geraldine Harmon Bertsch, age 86, of Ormond Beach, passed away Feb. 20, 2010 at the Hospice Care Center in Port Orange. She was born in Rindge, NH, on June 25, 1923 the only child of William S. and Helen H. Cleaves.

Geraldine attended merchandising school and retired as a retail buyer. Over the years she and her late husband, Martin, lived in many places up down the east coast and in Munich, Germany. They both enjoyed traveling. The marriage produced no children so Geraldine became a devoted volunteer, working for various causes over the years and, since moving to Florida, became an active volunteer with the Pinkadilly Thrift Shop. She also had a passion for collecting antiques.

Mrs. Marion Haskell Thurston, aged 101, died 5 July 1994 at Milbridge, Maine, nursing home. She was born in Steuben 26 February 1893, daughter of Charles H. and Nellie (Cummings) Haskell and attended Steuben schools and later Cherryfield Academy from which she graduated In June 1912. She taught in area schools and in September 1915 married Cleveland Thurston of Newcastle, who predeceased her in 1981. She served as town clerk for Steuben and librarian at the Henry D. Moore Library for 19 years. She proudly held the Boston Post newspaper Gold-Headed Cane for Steuben.

She was survived by brother Charles H. 'Carl' Haskell of Steuben, three sons, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A private Internment service was held at Steuben Cemetery.
