Both of her parents had been teachers in Iowa and Nebraska for many years before homesteading near Marcus about 1907. Caroline was born in Iowa in 1855 and attended Grimmell College. William was born in 1852 in Ohio. They were married in March 1879 at Toledo, Tama county, IA. The three eldest daughters, Lydia, Maude, and Elsie already had some teacher training at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, IA and some teaching experience before coming to SD, so they resumed teaching almost immediately (after filing on individual homesteads) in Meade County rural schools and surrounding areas. They never married, so they continued teaching for the remainder of most of their lives.
Their brother, Owen Ballard, remained in Iowa, married, and raised a son, Lloyd and daughter, Pearl. Lloyd and wife lived in Cherokee, Iowa and Pearl in Kingsley, Iowa.
Lola married Thomas Simmons, formerly of Marcus, and raised two sons, Donald and George. Both are married and live in Rapid City with their families. Donald has three daughters and two sons. George has four daughters and two sons.
