Volume 13, No. 1, March 2004When DAVID EMANUEL HASKELL died on 28 August 1936 at Vevay in Switzerland County, Indiana, USA, his passing was scarcely noted beyond local newspapers, yet he was part of an important link to the past.
He was born 13 August 1840, son of Thomas and Phillipine Thiebaud Haskell. On 22 August 1861 he was mustered into Co, A, 3rd Indiana Cavalry Regiment and was quickly promoted to sergeant. He was wounded at Upperville, Virginia on 21 June 1863 _ On 9 June 1864 he was captured by the Confederates at Reams Station, Virginia, and sent to the infamous POW camp at Andersonville, Georgia, where he temporarily lost his sight, as many did, due to starvation.
He was a witness to the prison's "miracle spring", which appeared after a lightening strike brought forth a gushing spring that lasted for many years. It was so called because it saved the lives of many prisoners who were dying of thirst.
Due to his infirmities, Sgt. Haskell was exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 28 April 1865 and honorably mustered out of the army on 5 May 1865 at Indianapolis, Indiana.
He married first Josephine Gray on 3 June 1869, who died 25 June 1881. On I January 1885 he married Indiana W. Henry at Pleasant, Indiana. He had three hildren.
When he died in 1936 at age 96, the local newspapers described him as "Switzerland County's oldest and one of its finest gentlemen" and "probably the last survivor of the infamous prison at Andersonville".
Interment was in the Vevay Cemetery.
