Ezra Haskell, (1814-1879) a shipmaster, was born in North Yarmouth and went to sea at a young age. He and Maria L. Frank (1822-1898) of Gray were married in 1849. By the early 1860s the couple lived in Portland although Ezra sailed out of Boston as captain of vessels which transported cargoes along the U.S. east coast and as far south as Brazil and Argentina. Maria was among the 25% of shipmasters' wives who were able to sail with their husbands. Maine Historical Society has an 1851 journal she wrote on one of her voyages. The society also owns portraits of the Haskells.
