16987. Roger Nelson Steere

The following notes from Ancestry of Bob and Mary Beth Wheeler database on RootsWeb WorldConnect submitted by Mary Beth Wheeler:

From Steere Genealogy, ID #356, pg. 157 Roger Nelson Steere established a family in Napa, California. Though fairly numerous, the descendants in 1969 do not carry the name Steere in any instance. It is reported that his mother, Abigail Haskell, appears to have come from Maine, and that her mother's name was Nelson.*  Roger Nelson was born in Smithfield, R.I. in the part now the city of Woonsocket, on Oct. 12, 1838 according to Root, but 1840 according to his grave marker. He left Rhode Island as a young man, taught in schools in Missouri, then migrated to California at about 21 years of age. He studied law, became prominent in his profession, and was the first District Attorney in the counties north of San Francisco Bay. He settled in Napa, where he married on May 31, 1866 Rebecca Lucinda Grigsby in 1849, her lineage traceable to the first settlers in Virginia. He died in Napa at the height of his career in 1880."
