The community was saddened Tuesday morning to hear the passing away of Glenn Paige, who had been sick the past week with pneumonia, following influenza, at the home of his sister, Mrs Willard Bullard. Mr Paige, who was well-known here as alad of good clean habits, was born in New Salem, son of Mr & Mrs A D Paige, receiving his education from common schools and New Salem Academy.

After Leaving school he lived some time in Orange, working in the New Home sewing machine factory, but the past year had worked for Bullard Bros., making his home with his sister, Mrs Harriet Bullard. He was a great lover of music, being an excellent singer and having much natural musical talent which he cultivated to a certain extent.

Besides his father and mother he leaves a wife Agnes E and five sisters, Mrs Myron Doubleday of North Dana, Mrs Harvey Reed of Providence, RI., Mrs William Bullard, Mrs Carrie Gagnon of Easthampton, Mrs Robert Cadwell of Orange, also three brothers, Ashael Paige of Maine, Stanley Paige of New Hampshire and Timothy who lives at home in New Salem.

The body was placed in the tomb at North New Salem for burial in the spring at New Salem Center cemetery in the family lot bg 33.

Mrs. Emily Ella Close passed away at her home Tuesday afternoon Tuesday afternoon, June 5, from old age infirmities.

Mrs. Close, 82, was born in Dickinson on July 11, 1851, daughter of Harry and Lorraine Daggart Haskell. On September 21, 1871, she was married to Adna Close. Since then they have made their home, around Lawrenceville.

Those surviving are; three children, Harry and Miss Lorraine Close and Mrs. Viola Vondell all of Lawrenceville; one sister, Miss Sally Haskell, Lawrenceville; one brother, Ernest Haskell, Brushton, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Snodgrass funeral home this afternoon for Horton H. Haskell who died in La Grande Saturday.

Mr. Haskell was born in Dickinson, N.Y. in 1860. He came west to Salem, Ore., whem a young man and spent the remainder of his life in the Pacific Northwest.

While in Salem he met Rebecca Gesner and on July 14, 1887, they were united in marriage. To this union were born five children, all of whom are living. They are Howard of Pullman, Wn.; Elna of Yakima, Wn., Reuben of Portland, Ore.; Rebah Huff of La Grande; and Margaret Larsen of Ridgefield, Wn. He also leaves one brother and one sister, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.


Rebecca Allaway Gesner

Reverand J. W. Slaten, of Cove, conducted the funeral services of Mrs. Rebecca Allaway Haskell in La Grande Saturday, the services taking place at the Snodgrass and Zimmerman funeral service parlors. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery.

Mrs. Haskell was born July 25, 1864, in Salem, Oregon, and died at her home in Wallowa county, January 17, 1924, at the age of 59 years, five months and 22 days. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Gesner.

The deceased was a dutiful and loving daughter and left a host of friends to mourn her demise. She received her education in the Oregon public schools and also graduated from Willamette College. She followed the profession of teaching for several years.

She was married to H. H. Haskell on July 14, 1887, and to this union was born five children, three sons and two daughters, Elmo Y. Haskell of Enterprise; Mrs. Reva Huff, La Grande; Miss Margaret Haskell, Enterprise; Ruben G. Haskell, Portland and Howard Haskell, Pullman, Wash., all who survive her. She leaves also two grand children, two brothers and four sisters.

She was a member of The Baptist church, Joining at Chehalis, Washington.

Marie Ellen Houser

Marie Ellen Haskell of Portland was entombed Jan. 4 in Portland Memorial Mausoleum.
She died Dec. 31 of age-related causes in a Portland care center. She was 100.

Mrs. Haskell, who was born in Stayton on June 28, 1892, was raised and educated in Portland. Her maiden name was Houser.

She was married for more than 50 years to Reuben Haskell, who died in 1976. At one time, she owned and operated Marie Haskell's Beauty Shop.

She is survived by her nephews, Harold Houser of Bend, Jack Houser of Flagler Beach, Fla., and Max Houser of Tempe, Ariz.; and nieces, Ellen Fauth of Albany and Violet Banks of Des Moines, Wash.

Tuesday, 27 October 1942, the Tacoma News Tribune of Tacoma Washington, USA, reported: Apparently a victim of a sudden heart attack while walking on the tideflats on his way to work, Minard Haskell, 77, of 3930 South Monroe Street, died at a late hour Saturday night. His son, J. M. Haskell, found his father's body, slumped in bushes at the side of Milwaukee Road at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

Mr. Haskell had been in normal health and spirits when he left home to go to work at the Nelson Boiler Works. He was only a few hundred yards from the door of the plant, police said, when he was fatally stricke

Mr. Haskell was a charter member of Warren Lodge, F. & A.M., and of the W. M. A. He was a resident of Tacoma for 23 years.

He leaves his wife, Margaret; sons Harry of Vancouver and J. M. and T. B. of Tacoma; daughters, Mrs. T. A. Ligman of Tacoma and Mrs. Louise Springle of California; sister, Mrs. Jennie Metz of California; 17 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Burial was at Mountain View Memorial Park with Warren Lodge, F. & A. M. in charge.


Margaret Louise Baird

Sunday, 28 February 1943, the Tacoma Sunday Ledger-News Tribune reported: Mrs. Margaret Louise Haskell, 67, died en route to a hospital Saturday afternoon following a heart attack at her home, 3930 South Monroe Street. Born in Missouri, Mrs. Haskell had lived in Tacoma 25 years. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and Warren Chapter, O. E. S.

The widow of Minard Haskell, she is survived by three sons, two daughters, a brother, Charles Baird of Baker, Oregon; 16 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.


Theodore K. Metz

Chehalis, Wash. - Theodore K. Metz, for many years a resident of Chehalis, died in Portland April 13, following a long illness, aged 52 years. He was taken there recently for treatment.

Mr. Metz was born in Marysville, Iowa, and with his father's family came to Walla Walla in 1882. In 1884 he came to Winlock and later to Chehalis.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Jennie Metz; four sons, Ray and Alonzo Metz of Chehalis, Minard Metz of Centralia, Theodore Metz of Chehalis and Mrs. Earl Scott of Hollywood, Cal.; his mother, Mrs. 'Ellen Metz of Chehalis and two brothers, Fred Metz of Hollywood, Cal., and Claude Metz of Bend, Ore.
