15744. William Henry Cory

Mr. William Henry Cory died at his home last Saturday evening from an attack of heart trouble. He had been in poor health for some time but his last illness was very short, lasting only about an hour. He was seventy-eight years of age and had been married fifty-two years, his wife being Miss Emily Doty of Bristol.

Besides his widow, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. John L. Tallman, Mrs. Clarence Brown and Mrs. Albert C. Hall. Another daughter, Miss Nellie Cory died more than fifteen years ago. Mr. Cory was the only son of the late Joseph and Sarah Fish Cory of this town.

Mrs. Mary Emma Tallman, wife of the late John Levi Tallman, of Sprague street, Portsmouth, died Monday at her home on the East Main road, after a two wweks illness.

She was 71 years old, a daughter of the late William Henry and Emily (Doty) Cory. She leaves a sister, Mrs. J. Harriet Brown, two other sisters having died several years ago.

She was a member of the Ladies Society, the guild and the sanctuary of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church, She was also a member of the Colonel William Barton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and a charter member of the Portsmouth Public Library Association. Mrs. Tallman has always lived in Portsmouth. In recent years she made her home with her sister, Mrs. Brown.


John Levi Tallman

John Levi Tallman died suddenly at his home Friday of last week, from apoplexy. He had been in poor health for some time, suffering from stomach trouble, and had been sick in bed only a few days. He was the youngest of five children of the late Levi and Amy Childs Tallman. Only two are now living, Mrs. Almina Tallman, widow of John Wesley Tallman, and Josephine, wife of Edward Browning. He married Miss Mary Cory, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Cory of this town. There are no children. Mr. Tallman was formerly a member of the Town Council, holding office for eleven years, resigning the position four years ago. The funeral services were held at the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Cory, on Saturday. There was a large attendance. Rev. Frank Talbee conducted the services, assisted by Rev. John Wadsworth

Interment in Corylot in Portsmouth cemetery.

Albert Cook Hall died at his home Friday morning, having suffered a shock two weeks ago today. He was the youngest son of Robert Dennis amd Mary Almy (Cook) Hall and was born February 9, 1856, in the house which his ancestor William Hall built when he came from England in 1638, the year the town was settled. This house was owned and occupied by the Hall family until a few years ago. Mr. Hall married , 33 years ago, Miss Sarah D. Cory, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Cory. He is survived by his widow and two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Sisson of Portsmouth and Mrs. Alice Sisson of Providence, and a brother, Robert Dennis Hall of Boston. Another brother, David Franklin Hall of Portsmouth, died three years ago, and a sister, Mrs. Emma Sisson of Boston died several years ago. Mr. Hall was always a farmer and was of a quiet disposition. He was brought up in the old Quaker Church of the Town.

Mrs. Harriet A. Brown, 82, of 3216 East Main Road, Portsmouth, widow of Clarence E. Brown, died Friday at Newport Hospital. She was born in Portsmouth, March 16, 1873, the daughter of the late William H. and Emily (Doty) Cory. She was a Mayflower descendant.

Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Guild and Auxiliary of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Portsmouth Free Public Library Association.

There are no immediate survivors.


Clarence Edward Brown

Mr. Clarence Edward Brown, who had been ill only a few days with pneumonia died on Sunday morning at his home on Quaker Hill. He was the only son of the late Edward P. Brown and his wife, Josephine Brown, and was in his fifty-second year. He married Miss Harriet D. Cory when a young man. Mr. Brown was born in this town, and has resided here all his life.

He is survived by his widow and his mother, Mrs. JHosephine Brown. The funeral was held on Wednesday at his late home at 2 p.m.

Joseph C. Brazell, husband of Mrs. Hannah B. (Corey) Davis Brazell died Sunday at his home ... Sprague street, Portsmouth, after a long illness. He was in his seventy-fifth year.

Son of the late John and Della Brazell, he had spent most of his life in Portsmouth. He had three sons, Frank F., Earl. and Joseph Brazell of Portsmouth, a daughter, Mrs. Charles E. Thompson of Fall River, a step daughter, Mrs. Ella F. Davis, ... grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Joseph Brownell Brazell, 73, of 47 Parks Ave., Providence, a retired Portsmouth framer, died unexpectantly Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital. He moved to Providence three years ago.

Mr. Brazell was born in Portsmouth a son of Joseph C. and Hannah Tallman Cory Brazell. He was the husband of Mrs. Esther H. Johnston Brazell, who died in 1959. He leaves a sister, Mrs. Charles E. Thomas of Newport, a brother, Frank C. Brazell of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Esther H. Brazell, wife of Joseph B. Brazell of 38 Sprague St., Ports
mouth, died at her home yesterday afternoon after a long illness. She was born in Norwich, Conn., the daughter of John T. Johnston and Betsy King Johnston. Mrs. Brazell was a Fall River resident for 40 years before moving to Portsmouth 26 years ago to make her home. Besides her husband, she leaves a brother, Leroy Johnston of Fall River.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Hathaway RFuneral Home, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River. Interment will be in the Portsmouth cemetery.

Funeral services for Charles Whitman Cory, son of the late Asa and Mary (Cornell) Cory, who died Sunday in Kingfield, Maine, at the home of his son, the Rev. Charles W. Cory, Jr., were held Tuesday afternoon at the Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Norman Trafton, pastor of the Friends Church, officiated and prayers were said by Herman M. Chase. Burial was in the Portsmouth cemetery. The bearers were Mervin C. Briggs, William A. Lawrence, Herman M. Chase, Herbert Hull, Perry Berryman and John Spooner.

Mr. Cory was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth until two years ago when he went to Maine to live with his son. For many years he was engaged in farming on Middle road and about 20 years ago purchased the William T. Sherman fram opposite the fire tower.

He was the son of late Asa and Mary Cornell Cory. He leaves beside his son, two grandchildren, Paul and Elizabeth Cory. He lived on Middle road, Portsmouth until two years ago.

Mrs. Phoebe A. Cory, wife of Charles Cory, died Tuesday at her home on Middle road, her death being due to pneumonia, which followed an attack of influenza. Born in Portsmouth August 15, 1842, Mrs. Cory, who was a daughter of Isaac and Mary Sherman Grinnell, spent practically her entire life here.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cory is survived by one son, Rev. Charles W. Cory Jr. of Saugus, Mass., a grandchild, a brother, Charles Grinnell of Portsmouth, a sister, Mrs. Katherine Fitch of Los Angeles, Cal., several nieces and nephews in Newport. In addition to other nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends.

The deceased was a member of Friend's Church and assistant secretary of the Sunday School, and a member of the Missionary Society. Mr. Cory is ill with grip.

The funeral of John S. Freeborn was held from his late home, Rev. John Wadsworth conducting the services, Mrs. Charles B. Ashley and Miss Lola Ashley sang. The bearers were Richard R. Macomber, Frederick V. Tallman, George Failkuer and Benjamin Pierce. There were many moral tributes.

Mr. Freeborn was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freeborn. He was one of three children, and is survived by one brother, William Frederick Freeborn. A sister, Mrs. Patience Shurliffe, of Providence died many years ago, as did Mr. Freeborn's wife. He had eight children, four of whom are living, Charles L., John and Ralph Freeborn and Mrs. Annie Tucker.

The death of Mr. Daniel W. Hambly occurred Monday evening at the Newport Hospital, where he had been for the past week. He had been in failing health a long time but was taken worse about two weeks ago and failed steadily until death came.

Mr. Hambly was born in Tiverton and was one of a large family most of his brothers and a sister surviving him.

He was married to Miss Emily Freeborn daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John S. Freeborn of this town, and since her death Mr. Hambly has lived alone.

He was a blacksmith by trade and worked at that business in this town until he was obliged to give up because of ill health.

Mrs. Edgar M. Sherman died Saturday morning. She had been ill but was better, and her sudden death was quiote unexpected. She was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Freeborn, who with four sisters and three brothers survive her.

The body of Edgar Sherman, 71, was found Monday in his two room apartment on East Main road, just north of Union street, Portsmouth, about 9:45 o'clock by Police Chief Benjamin Phillips. Dr. Burton O. Storrs, medical examiner said death was caused by a self inflicted gunshot wound. He said the man had been dead about a week. The body was removed to the Hambly Funeral Home.
Sherman, son of the late Frederick and Emily Sherman, had been missed for some time, and when Chief Phillips was notified he went to the house. It was locked, but he saw the body lying on the bedroom floor and broke open the door.

He was the son of  the late Frederick and Emily (Phillips) Sherman. Surviving are three nephews, Ernest L.,  Lester H. and Lloyd A. Sisson, and a niece, Mrs. Lillian Phillips.

Charles L. Freeborn died suddenly at his home, off East Main road, Saturday afternoon. He had been in good health recently, returning with Mrs. Freeborn from a 10 days' visit with relatives in Vermont. He was the son of the late John and Mary Freeborn of Dexter street, and leaves a widow, Mrs. Fannie Holman Freeborn, and a number of nieces and nephews in Portsmouth. He was one of six children. Mr. Freeborn was a member of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church and of Eureka Lodge of Masons. He was in his seventy first year.

The burial was at St. Paul's cemetery

Mrs. Fannie L. Freeborn, 90, of 2239 East Main road., Portsmouth, widow of Charles L. Freeborn, died in the Rest Haven Nursing Home, Portsmouth, Wednesday after a long illness. Her husband died in 1935.

Mrs. Freeborn was born in Portsmouth Oct. 8, 1862, a daughter of Thomas Holman and Hannah B. Albro Freeborn. She leaves several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, where services will be conducted Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Edward Price, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.
Burial will be in St. Paul's cemetery.
