John Chase Mott

Thursday morning Mr. John C. Mott was found missing from his home on Freeborn street in Portsmouth and a search was at once made for him. In the afternoon the family were notified that his body was found in Barkers Brook, near his home. Mr. Mott made his home with his son on Freeborn street and had not been well for some time. At times he showed signs of despondency and it was probably while suffering from one of these attacks that he ended his life in such a manner.

The deceased was a son of the late Jacob Mott and two sons survive him; Alfred and William Mott; also a brother Edward A. Mott of Fall River.

15691. Henry Hedly

Mr. Henry Hedly died Friday evening at his home in Portsmouth, after a rather long illness ending in a two week confinement. Son of David and Mary Wilcox Hedly, the deceased was one of eight children born in Portsmouth, near the home where he died, spending his entire life in the town. He was one the sucessful fruit and vegetable farmers of the old school, and an active member of SAt. Paul's Medthodist Episcopal church, holding several offices on its clerical board.

Mr. Hedly married Lydia Palmer of Little Compton, who died a number of years ago. The deceased is survived by two children, Henry Chester Hedly of Norfolk, Va., who arrived Friday night with his wife and was at the bedside, when father died, and Mary, Mrs. Charles Borden, with whom he spent his later years.

An adopted son, David died last Februaryu, and a brother, also died November 26.

Besides his daughter and one son, he is survived by two brothers, Arthur of Portsmouth and Benjamin of Providence.

News has been recieved of the death of Mrs. Mary E. Carter, widow of Mr. William Truman Carter. at her home in Adamsville. Mrs. Carter, who was in her seventieth year, was born in this town, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Hedley. he resided in this town until after her marriage to Mr. Carter, when they went to reside in Adamsville.

She is survived by 9 children, Mis. Mabel Pratt of Boston, Arthur Carter, Atwell Carter, Mrs. Mary Ida Manchester, Walter E. Carter, Clifford Carter, Mrs. Lillian Simmons, Mrs. Edith Gray and William S. Carter. Twenty two grandchildren and one great grandchild survive, as do five brothers, Messrs. Henry, David, Atwell, Athur and Benjamin Hedley. One brother and a sister died some years ago.


William Truman Carter

Mr. Wm. Truman Carter of Adamsville, formerly of this town died at his home on Sunday. He was the son of the late William and Hannah (Allen) Carter of this town, being one of six children, three of whom survive him. - George A. of this town, Daniel of Middletown, and Cynthia, widow of Edward E. Anthony of Newport. The others were Hannah Caswell of Middletown, and Samuel A, Carter of this town. He married Miss Marietta Hedly and there were nine children all surving him.

The funeral of Atwell F. Hedley was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Friends Meeting House. Mr. Hedley, who had been in poor health for some time, died at his home on the West Main Road on Monday. The interment was in the Friends cemetery, with many beautifel floral tributes.

Mrs. Lillian Oswald Hedly Loy, 87, of 1152 West Main Road, Portsmouth, died today at the Nelson Nursing Home in Middletown. Mrs. Loy was born in Portsmouth on Oct. 5, 1868. the daughter of Israel and Laura Oswald [sic]. She lived in Portsmouth all her life.

Surviving are her husband, Ellsworth Loy of Mount Vernon, Ohio; a son, Atwell Hedly of Portsmouth; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Thomas of 10 Mary St. Newport, and Mrs. Inez Huddleston of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.

Arthur A. Hedly, 85, died Monday morning at his home, on West Main road, Portsmouth. His death was unexpected, although he had been in poor health for about four years.

He was born in Portsmouth, in the house that remained his home all his life, the son of David and Mary Ann Wilcox Hedly of Portsmouth. He was a fisherman and he became a stone mason. married 57 years ago Mary Ann Hathaway of Ilion, N.Y., who died nearly eight years ago. He has been for many years associated with the Quaker Church.

Mr. Hedley leaves four sons and two daughters, Alfred A. Hedly, Hartford, Conn., William S. Hedly of Somerville, Mass., John and Curtis B. Hedly of Portsmouth, Miss Mahala B. Hedly of Portsmouth, Mrs. Stella Ellis of Somerville, amd Mrs. Elizabeth Perry of Woonsocket, many grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. A brother, Benjamin Hedly of East Providence, survives.

The funeral of Mary Ann Hedley, wife of Arthur Hedley of West Main Road was held Sunday afternoon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Rev. John Beauchamp, rector, officiating. The bearers were Atwell Hedley, Walter Hedley, Howard Borden, Atwell Carter, Charles Carter and William Carter, nephew.

The burial was at St. Paul's cemetery.

Mrs. Hedley was born Suttoncofield, England, daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth Hathaway. She leaves a husband, Artthur Hedley; also Alfred Hedley of Hartford, John M. Hedley, Curtis Hedley, Mahala Hedley of Portsmouth and William S. Hedley, sons; Stella (Mrs. Charles W. Ellis) of Somerville, Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. William C. Perry) of Woonsocket, daughters, and 13 grandchildren. Mrs. Hedley also left one sister, Mrs. Benjamin Hedley, of Providence, and a brother, of Ilion, N.Y. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, also a member of the Ladies Society.

Portsmouth - Sidney T. Hedly, 85 of 201 Hedly St., a Portsmouth native and former Town Council member, died Sunday night at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Lois Chace Hedly.
Mr. Hedly was active in town government, serving on the Council from 1938 to 1946 and on the Board of Canvassers from 1955 to 1965. He attended Portsmouth schools and Rogers High School.

Born in Portsmouth Nov. 10, 1891, he was the son of John and Annie Thomas Hedly.

He was manager of the hardware department of P. D. Humphrey Lumber Co. in Tiverton until his retirement in 1957. He was a member of the Portsmouth United Methodist Church, sang in the choir and was financial secretary.

Besides his wife, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Anna Luther of Providence.


Abner Lake Tallman

Abner L. Tallman, 70. of 42 Church Lane, Portsmouth, a descendant of the founders of that community, died at his home earlt this morning after a long illness. He was the son of the late Abner and Harriet A. Sisson Tallman of Portsmouth. For a number of years he lived in Tiverton, later returning to his house on Church lane. His sister, Mrs. Mac W. Robinson of Portsmouth is his sole heir.
