July 10, 1942Funeral services for Charles Whitman Cory, son of the late Asa and Mary (Cornell) Cory, who died Sunday in Kingfield, Maine, at the home of his son, the Rev. Charles W. Cory, Jr., were held Tuesday afternoon at the Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Norman Trafton, pastor of the Friends Church, officiated and prayers were said by Herman M. Chase. Burial was in the Portsmouth cemetery. The bearers were Mervin C. Briggs, William A. Lawrence, Herman M. Chase, Herbert Hull, Perry Berryman and John Spooner.
Mr. Cory was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth until two years ago when he went to Maine to live with his son. For many years he was engaged in farming on Middle road and about 20 years ago purchased the William T. Sherman fram opposite the fire tower.
He was the son of late Asa and Mary Cornell Cory. He leaves beside his son, two grandchildren, Paul and Elizabeth Cory. He lived on Middle road, Portsmouth until two years ago.

February 8, 1929Mrs. Phoebe A. Cory, wife of Charles Cory, died Tuesday at her home on Middle road, her death being due to pneumonia, which followed an attack of influenza. Born in Portsmouth August 15, 1842, Mrs. Cory, who was a daughter of Isaac and Mary Sherman Grinnell, spent practically her entire life here.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cory is survived by one son, Rev. Charles W. Cory Jr. of Saugus, Mass., a grandchild, a brother, Charles Grinnell of Portsmouth, a sister, Mrs. Katherine Fitch of Los Angeles, Cal., several nieces and nephews in Newport. In addition to other nieces and nephews, and a large circle of friends.
The deceased was a member of Friend's Church and assistant secretary of the Sunday School, and a member of the Missionary Society. Mr. Cory is ill with grip.

June 28, 1913The funeral of John S. Freeborn was held from his late home, Rev. John Wadsworth conducting the services, Mrs. Charles B. Ashley and Miss Lola Ashley sang. The bearers were Richard R. Macomber, Frederick V. Tallman, George Failkuer and Benjamin Pierce. There were many moral tributes.
Mr. Freeborn was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freeborn. He was one of three children, and is survived by one brother, William Frederick Freeborn. A sister, Mrs. Patience Shurliffe, of Providence died many years ago, as did Mr. Freeborn's wife. He had eight children, four of whom are living, Charles L., John and Ralph Freeborn and Mrs. Annie Tucker.

December 28, 1917The death of Mr. Daniel W. Hambly occurred Monday evening at the Newport Hospital, where he had been for the past week. He had been in failing health a long time but was taken worse about two weeks ago and failed steadily until death came.
Mr. Hambly was born in Tiverton and was one of a large family most of his brothers and a sister surviving him.
He was married to Miss Emily Freeborn daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John S. Freeborn of this town, and since her death Mr. Hambly has lived alone.
He was a blacksmith by trade and worked at that business in this town until he was obliged to give up because of ill health.

September 20, 1897Mrs. Edgar M. Sherman died Saturday morning. She had been ill but was better, and her sudden death was quiote unexpected. She was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Freeborn, who with four sisters and three brothers survive her.

May 30, 1941The body of Edgar Sherman, 71, was found Monday in his two room apartment on East Main road, just north of Union street, Portsmouth, about 9:45 o'clock by Police Chief Benjamin Phillips. Dr. Burton O. Storrs, medical examiner said death was caused by a self inflicted gunshot wound. He said the man had been dead about a week. The body was removed to the Hambly Funeral Home.
Sherman, son of the late Frederick and Emily Sherman, had been missed for some time, and when Chief Phillips was notified he went to the house. It was locked, but he saw the body lying on the bedroom floor and broke open the door.He was the son of the late Frederick and Emily (Phillips) Sherman. Surviving are three nephews, Ernest L., Lester H. and Lloyd A. Sisson, and a niece, Mrs. Lillian Phillips.

September 20, 1935Charles L. Freeborn died suddenly at his home, off East Main road, Saturday afternoon. He had been in good health recently, returning with Mrs. Freeborn from a 10 days' visit with relatives in Vermont. He was the son of the late John and Mary Freeborn of Dexter street, and leaves a widow, Mrs. Fannie Holman Freeborn, and a number of nieces and nephews in Portsmouth. He was one of six children. Mr. Freeborn was a member of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church and of Eureka Lodge of Masons. He was in his seventy first year.
The burial was at St. Paul's cemetery

September 24, 1953Mrs. Fannie L. Freeborn, 90, of 2239 East Main road., Portsmouth, widow of Charles L. Freeborn, died in the Rest Haven Nursing Home, Portsmouth, Wednesday after a long illness. Her husband died in 1935.
Mrs. Freeborn was born in Portsmouth Oct. 8, 1862, a daughter of Thomas Holman and Hannah B. Albro Freeborn. She leaves several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, where services will be conducted Saturday afternoon by the Rev. Edward Price, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.
Burial will be in St. Paul's cemetery.
