Funeral services for George M. Hascall, 72, Rutland's oldest merchant, and a prominent Mason, who died Saturday after an illness of seven months, will be held at his home, 67 Vrescent street, this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. Graydon Brown, pastor of the Congregational church, will officiate. The burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Hascall has been in business as a jeweler for more than half a century. He was born in Bridport, November 21 1862. After his graduation from Rutland High school he learned the jeweler's trade under the late Albert Marshall, well known businessman in this city for many years.
Mr. Hascall then opened his first store on Main street, West Rutland, which he operated for a long period. He later moved to this city, where he became a partner of Frank J. Brown in a jewelry store on the West side of Merchants Row.
When this partnership was dissolved, he became affiliated with Clarence R. Channell in a similar business in the R.W. Warerman store on the east site of Merchants Row. After Mr. Channell's death a few years ago, Mr. Hascall continued as a jeweler in the same establishment, and also became a partner with his son Thomas H. Hascall, in a crockery and sporting goods store in the same building. This concern recently sold it's business.
Mr. Hascall was a 32nd degree Mason, first becoming identified with the Masonic order on April 1, 1889, when he joined Hiram lodge, F. and A. M., of West Rutland. He transferred to Center lodge in this city on November 11 1906, and had been its treasurer from April 1, 1914, up to the time of his death. He had served as worshipful master of Center lodge, and past commander of Killington commandery, Knights Templar. He was also a member of Davenport Chapter R.A.M.
Mr. Hascall is survived by his wife, the former Agnes Palmer of this city, whom he married in August 1886. Had he lived, the couple would have observed their golden anniversary next month. He also has two sons, Robert C. Hascall of Waverly Mass., and Thomas H. Hascall of this city and four grandchildren.
