Last sighted position Lt. Hascall - North Sea area. John Sherman Hascall went down with his P-38 near Belt-Schutsloot 100 miles East from were he was last sighted by Lt. Frakes. That day the weather wasn't all the best, rain and stormy. An eyewitness from Steenwijk, who was cycling from Steenwijk to Wanneperveen, did suddenly hear the sound of a plane, but couldn't see it. One minute later the plane appeared through the clouds, apparently damaged it fell straight in the peaty ground near a small lake - Schutsloterwijde"- There was not found any trace back of it - till July 1981 !!! - With some farmers, who were watching too, he saw luckily a parachute with the pilot. Everything did look alright, however he landed in the middle of the lake. Unable to get rid of his chute due the stormy weather he was blown in easterly direction.
The so-called "water-police" had been warned, but when they got John aboard the stormy weather had pulled him to often under water with fatal consequences. He did die in their hands, any help to get him back turned out unsuccesfull. Ironical he was considered to be an expert swimmer
