Mr Wiss was the son of the late John and Anna Barr Wiss and was born in Brooklyn on January 2, 1852, coming to Le Roy with his parents when very young. His father for some years was the proprietor of the Wiss House at the corner of Main and Lake streets, and after his death, his son conducted it for several years.

John Wiss was educated in the Le Roy academy and at different times when a young man clerked in Le Roy stores. In 1873 he purchased the F.W. 15252. Herbert Augustus Hascall

Herbert Augustus Hascall, son of Lucian A. Hascall and Ruby Valencia Northrup, was born 7 April 1859, in Le Roy, New York. The first record of Herbert in the Northwest was his purchase of property from Henry Yesler in Seattle in 1883.  Herbert worked for the railroad as a carpenter, building railroad stations. While working on the station in Tenino, Washington he met and subsequently married Delilah A. Davis. They were married in Olympia, Thurston, Washington on 26 February 1885 in the parlor of the Youngs Hotel. Delilah A. Davis, daughter of Jonathan Carson Davis and Eleanor Prince was born 3 September 1862 in Lewis county, Washington Territory (probably Bucoda, south of Tenino). After their marriage they went to Larned, Pawnee, Kansas.

Research of the  Seattle city directories found Herbert A. Hascall, carpenter, residing on the east side of Hyde street between Yesler and Lake Washington in 1889. From 1890 through 1896, he is listed at 110 Hyde and from 1897 to 1906 at 110 or 106 18th Avenue (varied with the year). Delilah is listed as a "widow" at 110 18th Avenue in 1908 and at the same address through 1916. From 1916 to 1937, she is found at either 106, 108, or 110 18th Avenue.

Delilah sued for and was granted a divorce on 15 June 1907. Delilah, in her divorce, asserted that Herbert "during their entire married life has rendered plaintiff's [her] life miserable and unbearable by reason of the jealous disposition, selfish nature and cruel conduct of the defendant [Herbert], all without any cause or provocation whatsoever; that he has continually accused her of unfaithfulness without any cause or provocation and that he is of a quarrelsome and boisterous nature and violent in temper; that he has always treated plaintiff [her] as a menial or a servant rather than as a wife and has never shown any love or affection for the plaintiff [her]." She agreed to permit Herbert to have custody over their 13 year old son Robert.

According to Lawrence Hascall, grandson of Herbert and Delilah, Herbert was a difficult person. Lawrence also indicated that they could not support separate houses, so they lived in the same house. From 1914 to 1918, Delilah is listed as the householder, while Herbert is shown as householder from 1925 to 1937. The residence on 18th is the same one mentioned on Hyde street and is the same property purchased from Yesler in 1883. There were actually three residences that served as living quarters for family members or as rental units. One of the units contained four apartments. In addition there was a small store that was also rented out. The buildings are still standing (1995).

Herbert died in Seattle on 5 October 1941, and was interred  on 9 October 1941, at Forest Lawn. The terms of Herbert's will assigned his son Herman Hascall as executor, and called for his properties to be split equally between his sons Herman and Robert after $5 was paid to his son Louis. The property on 18th was retained by Robert and Herman until they sold it on 6 February 1943.

Delilah A. Davis

Delilah died in Seattle, Washington on 3 March 1938, and was interred on 5 March 1938, at Forest Lawn cemetery in West Seattle. The terms of Delilah's will provided that her former husband, Herbert, would receive income from her properties, which would be administered by her son Louis Hascall.

Mrs. Gertrude Stryker Jennings Hascall of 1525 Dorchester rd., whose marriage to Harold Dawson Hascall at the Old Dutch Reformed Church in 1909 was a society event of that season, today obtained an interlocutory decree of divorce from Justice Druhan in Supreme Court.

They parted in 1924, and Mrs. Hascall told the court that she learned that he had been living with another woman, whose identity was not disclosed in court. This was brought to light, the Court was told, through a news item to the effect that a child, described as Geraldine Hascall had met her death by falling from a high apartment window of a Bronx house.

Mrs. Violet Schirmer, superintendent of the Bronx house, told Justice Druhan that Hascall and the other woman had lived there for six months as "Mr. and Mrs. Hascall". Justice Druhan directed him to pay $30 a week. Hascall, who was described as an advertising man, did not defend the suit.
