Le Roy GazetteDeath of Mrs. Alice Hascall Root
The sad intelligence of the death of Mrs. Alice Hascall Root reached this village on Saturday forenoon, her death having taken place in a hospital in New York that morning about two o'clock. About three weeks ago Mrs. Root, who had for some time been suffering from physical ailments, went to Chicago to consult a specialist and later went to Evanston, a suburb of that city. She did not improve and less than two weeks ago she went to New York for treatment. While it was found that she was suffering from an incurable disease, it was thought she might live several months and her death was quite unexpected. Her two sons were in New York with her and the night before her death were at her bedside until about eight o'clock. A few hours later Mrs. Root suffered a sinking spell and passed quickly away.
Mrs. Root had many friends to whom the news of her death was a great shock and sorrow. Her kindly smile and pleasant face will be long retained in thr memory of many and especialy those who new her best. No unfortunate ever went from her door unaided and many a weary soul can testify to her kindly ministrations. Charitable towards all and following in the footsteps of Him in whom she believed, her eyes were closed to earth only to be opened in the paradise of God.
Mrs. was a daughter of the late Hiram Hascall. She was born in this village 60 years ago and was educated at Ingham University. In 1862 she became the wife of Charles Root, who for many years conducted a wholesale dry goods business in Detroit, where they made their home. Mr. Root died in 1888 and soon afterwards Mrs. Root returned to Le Roy, to make her home with her father.
The deceased is survived by two sons, Marshall J. Root, of Buffalo, and George Root, of Detroit.
The funeral was held Monday afternnon from her late home, Rev. Pierre Cushing officiating, and the remains were interred in the family plot in Machpelah.
