Obituary
The Rev. Samuel H. Haskell of Homer, 69 years old and one of the best known Baptist clergmen of Central New York, died at 4:20 o'clock this morning at the home of his son Herbert M. Haskell, No, 126 Ostrander Avenue.

Mr. Haskell has been in failing health since last August, but his condition was not considered at all critical until about the 1st of January. About five weeks ago he became decidedly worse and came to the home of his son, during which time he had been steadily sinking.

He was born May 28, 1838, at Homer, in and around which place he spent the greater part of his life. Mr. Haskell has been an active clergyman for the past thirty years, having early held charges at Egermont, Mass., Milford, Del., and in the East. His last pastorate was the First Baptist church of Throopsville.

For several years his work was carried on under the auspices of the Baptist State association, in which capacity he became familiar with Baptist ministers all over the State.

Mr. Haskell was a graduate of the New York Central college at McGraw, an institution long since extinct. He enlisted with with Company I, Seventy-fifth regiment in Auburn, in 1862, and was in Port Hudson during its forty day siege, but escaped unscathed. In 1864 he recieved wounds in the left hand and shoulder, as a result of which he was discharged that year.

Mr. Haskell was for many years chaplain of the Seventy-fifth Regiment association. He was was a frequent contributor to many secular periodicals. During the time he lived in Homer he was intimately acquainted with David Hannum, the original of Edward Noyes Westcott's novel, "David Harum." Besides his son he is survived by his widow, Sarah Marble Haskell.
