Volney graduated from the Academy in South Glastonbury, CT. He studied law for a year, decided it wasn't the career for him, and he went on the road selling watches, jewelry, silver and silver plate for 27 years. In time he had 27 teams selling goods for him. After he retired from merchandising, he took up the lumber business. During the Civil War, he was a recruiting officer.
