Descendants of William Hascall of Fontmell Magna (1490-1542)

Notes

7790. James Monroe Haskell

Correspondence with Barbara West
James Haskell, son of Solomon's brother John Haskell, served in the same regiment as his uncle Solomon, but in a different company: New York Heavy Artillery, 2nd Regiment, Company L, Private.

***[Note: though there were lots of Haskells named James around at that time, including Solomon's 10-year-old son, it was John Haskell's son who served in Company L, as evidenced by a two fragmentary snippets from the Fort Wayne Indiana Gazette.  One is dated 21st May 1908, which says James Haskell had passed away (on the 19th?) and was born in New ___ and served throughout the Civil ___.  The other is from 1907, which shows that James' son had died the year before his father, James Haskell of Wel___ (Wells County, Indiana), and was survived by his brother William, of Mason City, Iowa.  No James Haskells served in Indiana regiments, so he must have gone back to his native New York to volunteer.]

Waddington, May 26 Mrs. Elsie Haskell, 74, widow of Albert Haskell, died Sunday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brown, five miles from here on Ridge road where she had been living the past three years.

Born in Dunbar, Ont., Feb. 15, 1862, the daughter of Amos and Diana Hawn Mead, she came to this county when a young girl and was employed as a domestic until her marriage to Mr. Haskell who died ten years ago. She had always lived in Waddington since she came to this country.

Several years ago she fell and broke her hip and since that time had been an invalid.

She lived with Mrs. William Cagler until she was taken ill and then went to the Brown home. She died from heart attack.

She is survived by a sister in Ont., and several nieces and nephews.

7797. Rosell Duwell Haskell

Correspondence with Barbara West
Rosell Duwell Haskell, Solomon's 24-year-old son, married Hannah Philips in Ridgeley, Platte, Missouri only 10 days before her child was born (!) and his cavalry regiment was mustered the very next day after the birth.  He served on the Union side in the Missouri State Cavalry, 4th Regiment, Company A, and was promoted to Sergeant by the end of the war.

***[Note: he seems to have come back to his "shotgun wife" after the war, but they had no more children, and following her death in 1872, he apparently married her sister Sadie (or cousin?), and they had seven children together.]
