7671. David Blackmer

David Blackmer came to Michigan in 1856 from Mass., according to a genealogist in Blackmer family. He was born Oct. 15, 1803 and died in Milan on May 4, 1888. Marriage: May 29, 1826. His wife, Zeviah Parminter Blackmer, also came to Milan from Mass. In 1856. She was b. July 4, 1805 and died Oct. 13, 1871 in Saline.

David Blackmer was born in Hampshire county, Mass, on Oct. 15, 1803. He was 15 when he learned to be a shoemaker. He had a business with a boot and shoe firm in Mass. On May 29, 1826, while in Mass, he married Zeviah Parmanter, who was born July 4, 1805. David Blackmer came to Michigan May 2, 1856, going to Ypsilanti, then in 1859 to Saline. In 1872 (at the age of 69) he came to Milan, to engage in the mercantile business. His wife died of cancer Oct. 13, 1871. They had four children. He was a member of Baptist Church in Milan; in 1885 he purchased a bell for the church, which cost $1,000.

Sophrona Maine was born April 20, 1808 at Otsego, N.Y. and died March 22, 1895 at the home of her son, Benjamin, in Franklin. She was married to Alanson Gibbs, October 14, 1830, and in the year 1845 they came to DeKalb county, Ill. where she has since resided, her husband preceding her to death by ten years. Her union with the M.E. church was in 1867 and she ever remained a faithful member.

Mrs. Gibbs was the mother of seven children, one, Mercy G., being dead twenty years, and the others survive her: David, Dwight, Parker, Benjamin, Ami and Mrs. Eustacia (Brown).

The funeral services were held from the Charter Oak church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Frazier of Kirkland, officiating. The remains were interred in the Blood's Point cemetery. Parker Gibbs came from Boone county, Iowa, to attend the funeral; Dwight, who lives in Kansas, being the only one not present. Uncle Elias Maine, of Galesburg, is the surviving brother of the deceased and was present at the funeral.
