Francis arrived in Utah 24, June 1847. He was a high priest. He was a Justice of the Peace in Paris, Idaho and Mesa, Arizona. Engaged in the sawmill, shingle and lathe machine business. The following is from "The Mormons 100 Years in the San Louis Valley of Colarado 1883-1983", (Published by the La Jara Stake of the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Compiled by Carleton Q. Anderson, Betty Shawcroft & Robert Compton. This biography of Thales that follows used much from this work.Thales Hastings Haskell crossed the plains for Utah in 1847. After arriving in Salt Lake he was useful in developing the city and was called on to conduct relief missions to the plains to aid stranded emigrant companies. At about the age of 20, Thales was called to join others to explore and colonize Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Souhern Nevada. They were to work with the Indian Tribes to teach them the Gospel, and train them in farming.
He often set out to aid travel parties or recover cattle stolen by the Indians. This called for him to be away from home for extended periods. Once, he was held as a hostage, by the Moqui Tribe of Northern Arizona, until members of the tribe returned from a peace mission to Utah. The dangers faced are evident, considering that his first wife, Hannah Maria Woodbury Haskell, was killed by an Indian.
He became fluent in Spanish and many Indian languages. He also was versed in Indian sign language. When he was released from his mission in 1886, he settled in the San Louis Valley of Colorado. After a brief respite he set out to aide settlers in Souther Utah with their problems with the Indians. This sojourn lasted for 3 years. After his return to the valley he was postmaster for the settlement of Manassa.

Encyclopedia of Native American Religions by Arlene Hirschfelder and Paulette MolinHaskell, Thales Hastings (1834-1909) A Mormon missionary who was born in North New Salem, Massachusetts, on February 21, 1834. Thales went to Utah with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in search of his father who had travelled to California. During his career Haskell worked with Jacob Hamblin and was a member of most of Hamblin's mission expeditions to the Hopi people. His first wife, Marian Woodberry, was killed by an adopted Indian boy who accidentally shot her.
