John Starbird and John Gray bought two adjoining lots in Woodstock in 1804. John was living in Woodstock when it was incorporated as a town Feb 7, 1815. In 1802, John Starbird's name appears on the petition to separate Paris and Woodstock. In 1825, his farm became a part of Paris.
Family tradition holds that somewhere in the Coles there was Indian blood. Evelyn Huckins wrote to Gram Vera that Clifton Dunham's daughter Linda had been told by Clifton of an Indian princess who married into the family and that "many of us cousins have heard of it." Evelyn mentioned that Starbird is sometimes and Indian name.
Gerry Berry Wheeler, a descendant of Augustine R. (son of Stephen Starbird) had always been told that the Starbirds were part Indian. (Gerry Wheeler, 46 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine 03904)
