Two stories from his grandchildren.

There are several stories abouth grandpa's life in Nova Scotia. One is that he was a fisherman and it is said he sailed the seven seas before he was twenty-one years old. He may have gone to sea at the age of 14 as a cabin boy, working the North Atlantic Grand Banks fishing grounds. He seldom talked about his life in Nova Scotia. Yet, when he did it was about boats and fishing. He sketched a pencil drawing of a three masted schooner saying it was a ship he sailed on. The sketch was put away never to be seen again.

Grandpa was a good cook, particularly with seafood. His clam chowder, oyster stew and codfish cakes could be served in any 5 star restuarant. Every once in while he would make a meal of molasses and bread, and he liked his coffee black but was partial to tea and would often pour it into a deep saucer and drink from that.

A much rumored story is he left Nova Scotia in a hurry at the age of 21. He and a friend were beach combing for salvage after a storm. It seems that a ship carrying cask's of rum had broken up during the storm and Grandpa and his friend found several that had washed up on the beach. Since the rum was under the Royal Seal of England it should have been turned over to the officials. However, Grandpa and his friend decided the best thing for them to do was to sell it rather than give it to the authorities. Since this was against the law Grandpa recieved word that it would be best for him to leave within forty-eight hours or go to jail. He left. Elizabeth Landers of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, confirms the story. She says her father, Herbert Trask, helped Grandpa get aboard a boat so he could leave home.
