Myrna Bryant Hulme, of Jacksonville, Florida and Bremen, Maine, died January 7, 2004 at age 97. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was a graduate of Boston Teachers College, Class of 1927, and she taught in the Boston School System for four years.

She was predeceased by her husband, RADM John Hulme (1906-1997), and her son, Dr. George Hulme, who died with his two young sons in a tragic accident in 1979.

She is survived by two sons, John Hulme (wife Donna), Nelson Hulme (wife Dorothy); eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Arolyne R. Libby, 40, of North Auburn, died unexpectedly Sunday at her home. She was born at Waldoboro, May 29, 1922, the daughter of Jesse E. and Rhonda Western McLain. Educated in Lewiston schools, she was married June 21, 1941 to Louis Libby.

She is survived by her husband, one son, Daniel of Auburn; a brother, Earl McLain of Hartford, Conn; four sisters, Mrs. Marion Creamer, of Wiscasset; Mrs. Elsie Schwartz of Waldoboro; Mrs. Martha Creamer of Lewiston; and Mrs. Norma Clark of Auburn

LEWISTON - Lewis E. Libby, 82, of Leeds, died Wednesday evening at Central Maine Medical Center.

Born at South Portland May 17, 1907, the son of James B. and Hortense Emmons Libby, he was educated at Leeds Elementarey School and Scarborough Schools, and was a 1924 graduate of Lewiston High School.

Mr. Libby was an Army Veteran of World War II, and also served briefly in the U.S. Navy. He was married to Arolyn McLain on June 28, 1941. She died Nov. 11, 1962. On June 6, 1970, he married Marguerite Carver, who died July 4, 1981.

He was employed by National Biscuit Co. for 10 years, and owned a store at West Poland. He was also owner and operator of North Auburn Cash Market for 21 years, retiring in 1972.

In 1972, Mr. Libby moved from North Auburn to Park Way in Auburn. In 1982, he moved to Leeds.

He was a member of Ashlar Lodge No. 105, AF&AM.

For the past year due to failing health, he had resided with a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Clark in Auburn.

Survors include one son, Daniel of Leeds, one stepson Ronald Carver of Poland, one brother, Herbert of Leeds; and one grandson.

He was a son of Herbert and Marion Thompson Steer.

For 40 years, Mr. Steer resided in Portland, Maine, and later moved to Vernon. He recently moved here.

Surviving are his wife, Lynn S. Steer; three daughters, Brenda Michaud of Rockland, Maine, Pamela Dickey of Vernon and Claudia Fossett of Tolland, Conn.; a son, Franklin of Windham, Maine; a stepson, Neal Skinner of Cottondale, Ala.; two sisters, Thelma Calloway of Silsbee, Texas, and Bethiah Callahan of Round Pond, Maine; a brother, Harold of Walpole, Maine; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Harold E. Steer, 74, of Walpole died Friday at Miles Memorial Hospital, Damariscotta.

He was born in Bristol, a son of Herbert and Marion Thompson Steer, attended Bristol schools and graduated from Bristol High School in 1937.

For several years, Mr. Steer worked at the South Portland shipyards, until entering the Army. He served during World War II in Europe, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the Pacific and was discharged in 1946.

For many years, he drove trucks for several contracting companies. After retiring, he and his wife operated Damariscotta River Campground until his illness.

In 1967, a son, John, was killed in Vietnam.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Little Steer; two sons, Harold A. and Roger E., both in New Hampshire; two sisters, Thelma Calloway of Texas and Bethiah Callahan of Round Pond; and six grandchildren.


Martha Elizabeth Little

Martha E. Steer, 89, of Walpole, passed away at the home of her son in Plaistow, N.H. on the morning of Sept. 7. Born in Damariscotta, on Feb. 13, 1922, she was the daughter of Samuel and Mildred (Bryant) Little.

Martha grew up here and attended local schools, graduating from Lincoln Academy. She went on to further her studies at the Westbrook Junior College. She married the late Harold Steer in 1943. For many years, Martha worked for Sylvania, starting in Exeter, N.H. and eventually returning to the area to work at their Waldoboro location. After retiring, she and her husband operated the Damariscotta River Campground. Martha continued to run the campground even after her husband's passing in 1995.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold E. Steer in 1995; as well as their son, John, who was killed in the line of duty during the Vietnam War in 1967.

She is survived by her sons, Harold A. Steer and wife Carol-Ann of Walpole and Roger Steer and wife Carolyn of Plaistow, N.H.; sister-in-law, Bethiah Callahan of Round Pond; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; as well as two nephews and one niece.

WALDOBORO - Waite Wadsworth Weston, 73, a life-long resident of Waldoboro, passed away peacefully at his home March 8, 2014. Born on Sept. 5, 1940, in Portland, he was the only son of the late Kenneth K. Weston and late Rose D. Weston of Waldoboro.

Waite grew up in town and graduated from Waldoboro High School in 1958. He attended The University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. At UMO, he joined the Navy ROTC and was a fraternity member of the Delta Tau Delta chapter. After completing OCS, he served on the destroyers USS Beatty and the USS Gearing stationed out of Newport, R.I. Ultimately, he obtained the rank of Lieutenant JG before receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Navy. He married Mary W. (Woodward) Weston of Walpole in October of 1962. They were happily married for 44 years.

In 1966, he returned to Waldoboro to settle down and start a family. Waite and Mary have three children, Timothy S. Weston of Waterville, Thomas C. Weston of Philadelphia, and Tiffany A. Weston of Philadelphia.

Waite joined his father, Ken Weston, in ownership of the family hardware business, S.H. Weston & Sons in downtown Waldoboro. The business had been started by Waite's grandfather, Samuel Weston, in 1922 with his sons, Kenneth and Lawrence eventually joining the operation. For many years, Waite and Mary were fixtures in running the family business, especially after moving the store to the Route 1 location in 1978 and re-naming it Weston's Hardware. They ran the store until their retirement in 2002. The store closed after an 80-year run. Waite was an exceptionally hard worker and devoted family man. Waite enjoyed landscaping, boating, sporting events, class reunions, spending time with his grandchildren, extended family, friends and beloved dog. He served as a M.S.A.D. 40 school-board member, member of the American Legion, Certified Master Plumber, past president of the New England Hardware Dealer's Association in 1990, on the Board of Directors of the Waldoboro Savings and Loan, past president of the Board of Directors at the Waldoboro Bank, and recently, Treasurer of the German Protestant Society in Waldoboro.

Waite was predeceased by his wife, Mary W. Weston in May 2006. He is survived by his loving family, Wayne and Genie Cole (Woodward), Karin R. Weston wife of Timothy; granddaughters, Abigail S. Weston and Sofie A. Weston; Wilhelm and Ilse Pfander, David B. Hitt, Karol Hitt-Rowan, Rob and Beth Cole, cousins, extended family, and friends.


Joan Elizabeth Burnheimer

Joan Elizabeth Weston, 87, of Bremen, passed away on Feb. 25, at her home in Bremen. She was born June 21, 1917 in Waldoboro, the daughter of Victor V. Burnheimer, Sr. and Sarah Groton Burnheimer.

She graduated from Kents Hill at age 13, and from Bates College. Later she attended Duke University. She left teaching to run her father's business, Burnheimer's Grain, with her brother Victor. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Waldoboro Women's Club, and many other local organizations. Joan was a life long learner, avid reader and bridge player.

She loved being with her husband of 62 years, Phil Weston, who died in 2003. They enjoyed traveling, boating and gardening together.

Joan was a wonderful and loving mother and wife and will be missed by her friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Seifert and her husband, Sigbert of Bremen, and by her brother, Victor V. Burnheimer, Jr. of Waldoboro.

Walter Woodman Wright, 80, died Saturday at his home here after a long illness.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass., son of Prof. C.H.C. Wright and Elizabeth Woodman Wright. He graduated from Harvard College in 1937 and from Columbia University School of Library Science in 1938.

On Nov. 16, 1941, he married Aagot C. Horn in Cambridge, Mass.

After working in the Harvard College library, Mr. Wright held professional positions in the New York Public Library, the library of the Harvard Club of New York, the Johns Hopkins University Library, the University of Pennsylvania Library, where he was an assistant librarian, and at Ohio University in Athens, where he was director of libraries and assistant professor of library science.

There he directed the design and furnishings of a new seven-story library building before returning to New England in 1968. Mr. Wright then became curator of rare books and chief of special collections at Dartmouth College until his retirement in 1980.

He spent summers at the longtime family home at Paris Hill.

Mr. Wright held numerous officer and committee assignments and contributed to professional and other publications. He acquired an extensive collection of books on New England railroads and local history, especially the White Mountains, and he enjoyed visits by scholars engaged in research. Other collecting interests included the authors Noah Brooks, Samuel McCord Crothers and C.A. Stephens, and the family archives, including the writings of members of his family.

In Ohio he was among the founders of the Unitarian Fellowship of Athens, the Athens Memorial Society and the Athens County Historical Society. In New Hampshire he was a member of the Committee for a New England Bibliography and served on the New Hampshire Historical Records Advisory Board. From 1981 to 1984 he was president of the Lebanon Historical Society and belonged to several other state and local historical societies.

For many years he was active in the Paris Cape Historical Society.

He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Appalachian Trail Conference, the Nature Conservancy and the Mount Washington Observatory. His gift of extensive portions of his White Mountain collection in 1989 was a significant consideration in the Mount Washington Observatory's plans for an educational, research and administrative facility in the glen at the base of the mountain.

Mr. Wright was a member of Unitarian-Universalist churches in Cambridge, Mass., and South Paris and Brunswick. He was also a member of the Memorial Society of Maine.

Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Caroline W. Kuhl of Lakewood, Ohio; a son, Eric E. of Brunswick; two brothers, C. Conrad of Cambridge and Brooks of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Brooks Wright, 82, of Sweetwood Retirement Community died Tuesday at home after a long illness.

Born in Cambridge on Oct. 14, 1922, son of Charles H.C. and Elizabeth L. Woodman Wright, he graduated with honors from Harvard College in 1943 and received his doctorate in English from Harvard in 1950.

An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served in the China-Burma-India theater as a sergeant and cryptographic technician. His unit received a Distinguished Unit Citation.

Mr. Wright taught Asian literature at the City College of New York from 1950 to 1985. He also wrote several books.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, the former Mary Elizabeth Rankin; a son, Aldrich Wright of New York City; two daughters, Anne Wright of Albuquerque, N.M., and Martha Wright of Worcester; a brother, C. Conrad Wright of Cambridge, and four grandchildren.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Charles Jacob Wright, Noah Paul Wright, Jennifer Elizabeth Johnson and Kimberly Caitlyn Johnson.
