Barbara J. Hemeon, 89, died Thursday morning at Bridgton Health Care Center after a long illness. She was born in Gorham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Beman, attended Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School.

She married Harry R. Hemeon in 1953. He died in 1989.

Mrs. Hemeon was a certified public accountant and had worked for Central Maine Power Co. in Bridgton and the Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway, N.H. She was a member of the Bridgton Professional Women, the Bridgton Literary Club, the Friendship Class and the First Congregational Church, where she was active in the Ladies' Guild. She was a Girl Scout leader and had volunteered for the American Red Cross during World War II.

Surviving are a daughter, Joan B. Swasey of Dorchester in Boston; two granddaughters, Sallyanne Smith of Windham and Kathleen Swasey of Portland; three great-grandchildren, Jamie Smith of Windham, Judson Smith of Standish and Sandy Scally of Tewksbury, Mass.
