September 23, 2006As a young girl in the 1920s, Marie Henrietta Fowler would walk three miles to Kenwood School.
Later, she rode a horse there, but by the time she was in high school, she was driving a Model T Ford from her Kenwood home to Santa Rosa. As Sonoma County and Kenwood evolved from a rural agricultural area, one thing didn't change. Throughout most of her 91 years, Fowler lived on her ''little hill'' in Kenwood, in the family home off Bristol Road, near what is now the boundary of Annadel State Park. It was only a year ago that failing health forced her to move to a board and care home in Sonoma Valley.Fowler died Monday as a result of complications related to cancer, according to her son, Gordon Fowler of Sonoma. ''She was a family person -- involved, kind, caring and giving to family and friends,'' he said. She enjoyed the wildlife around her Kenwood home, from the deer to the raccoons, wild turkeys and other birds.
Born in San Pedro as Marie Chase, she moved to Kenwood when she was about 8 years old. Two years after graduating from Santa Rosa High School in 1932, she married George Fowler.
While he built housing for the military and also worked as a Teamster, she raised their three children. As a young woman she and her kids would often help with the harvests, as did many local families. ''When the crops were due, there weren't any Mexicans around,'' said her son. ''It was mostly community people who helped the ranchers harvest crops.'' The seasonal fruit ranged from prunes to walnuts, cherries and grapes.
By the 1950s, with her husband in declining health, she went back to school, to Empire Business College. She then worked at the Sonoma Chamber of Commerce and for more than a dozen years after that at the Sonoma Index-Tribune newspaper, where she coordinated advertising.
In retirement, she was active in the Kenwood Community Church, as well as in crocheting.
In addition to her son Gordon, she is survived by son Frank Fowler of Auburn. She leaves nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
