July 15, 2006INDIAN HILL - Hazen Parks Master, a retired regional manager and sales executive for Continental Can Co., died Monday of complications of a massive stroke at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. The Indian Hill resident was 79.
Mr. Master spent his early childhood in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he flew kites from the roof of his building and rode the dumbwaiter for entertainment. His family later moved to Long Island, where he attended Friends School. He graduated from Cushing Academy in Ashburn, Mass.
He joined the Navy during World War II and served as a quartermaster in the Pacific during the months before Japan's surrender. After the war, he attended Lehigh University, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta. Before graduating, he married Nancy McLaughlin.
His career at Continental Can took him from New York to Boston, to Chicago to Cincinnati and finally to Baltimore. He retired after 31 years and moved to Indian Hill to be near his daughter, Cici Grant of Anderson Township.
His wife, Nancy, died in June 2000 - after 51 years of marriage. In October of that year, he was introduced to Jane Harrier of Terrace Park, whose husband of 50 years, Stanley Harrier, had died in May. Mr. Master and Jane Harrier married at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park on Dec. 29, 2001, when they were both 75.
Mr. Master loved to sail. He also enjoyed woodworking and reading mystery novels.
In addition to his wife, Jane, and his daughter, survivors include: a son, Doug Master of Anderson Township; a sister, Gladys Byrne of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
