June 27, 2006CARBONDALE - Ruth L. Porter, 93, of Carbondale, formerly of California and Chicago, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
She was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Chicago, a daughter of the late Lester E. and Inez (Purvis) Lyon.She married Winston S. Porter on Sept. 29, 1934, and he preceded her in death July 28, 1987.
Mrs. Porter was a retired secretary for the Boy Scouts of America and the Highland Park school district.
She was an avid bridge player, an accomplished artist and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynne P. Shildler and husband, Jon, of Carbondale; four grandchildren, Kathe Jose, Tom Porter and Jim Porter, all of California, and Julie Brehmer of Michigan; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Robert George Porter on
March 5, 1991; five brothers and four sisters.
