March 17, 1990Louis W. Zimmer was a machinist and mechanic for General Electric Co. for 55 years.
He joined the firm in 1920 and returned as a consultant for 10 years after his retirement in 1965.
During his career, he traveled to Venezuela, Mexico, Hawaii, the Philippines, India, China and throughout the United States servicing GE plants.
Mr. Zimmer, 89, of Mayfield Heights, died Monday at Lake Hospital System (Willoughby) as the result of a stroke.
He was born in Collinwood.
When he was a first-grader, on March 4, 1908, the new Collinwood elementary school caught fire. He was pulled out of a broken window in the building and was the last child who could be rescued from the blaze. It killed 174 people, most of them children.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, William J. of Strongsville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a stepbrother.

June 9, 1998Joyce Harriet Esch, 90, of Kalamazoo died Sunday, June 7, 1998, in Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo.
She was born Aug. 7, 1907 in Union City to Frank and Ora Collard Ashley and completed 13 years of education.
She and her husband owned and operated Charlotte Appliance for 30 years until 1979.
She married Leo Frederick Esch on September 30, 1930. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are sons, John W. Esch of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Francis Esch of Haverhill, Mass.; a daughter Karen J. Rambaldt of Allegan; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

July 20, 1935C. F. Swain Killed In Auto Crash; One Hurt
CAR STRIKES POLE
AT BLACK BROOK RD. CURVEOne man was killed and another was injured shortly before midnight Friday when the roadster in which the two were riding crashed into a pole on a curve on Black Brook Rd. near the Black Brook golf course and 1,000 feet east of the Mentor school.
Carl F. Swain, aged 44 , of 73 Liberty St., was injured fatally, taken to Lake County Memorial Hospital by James and John Hemphill and Emil Norgrady at 11:28 p.m. He died at 12:35 a. m. today.
According to the sheriff's department report, Frank Richardson, Lusard St. who is employed by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., and who is known as ''Gus" Richardson, was driving the car. The pole struck was a Postal Telegraph Co. pole, the report stated.
Mr. Richardson was taken to a physician for treatment by James Evans. He suffered scalp wounds.
The right side of the roadster was badly damaged by contact with the pole.
Mr. Swain's death was caused by internal injuries, a fractured skull, a fractured leg and arm and lacerations.
Mr. Swain was a member of the American Legion and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served in Europe during the World War.
He was born in Conneaut, but had lived in Painesville for the past 29 yrs. For 2 years he had been employed as an attendant at the Lake County Oil station at the corner of Richmond and Erie Sts. Prior to that he worked at the Diamond Alkali Co.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha; two children, Carlyle, aged five, and Ursula, aged one; his mother, Mrs. W. C. Fralick of 457 E. Erie St. and a sister, Mrs. Frank Mahoney of 488 E. Erie St., city.
