GARDINER - Harry F. Atherton died Tuesday afternoon at his home in Pittston. He was born December 25, 1886 in Monticello, Maine, the son of Howard and Sadie (Gould) Atherton.

Surviving are his wife, Elise (Haksell) Atherton, Boston; 2 daughters, Alice Atherton, Boston and Mrs. Ruth Donahue, Boston and one half brother, J. S. Kitchen, Houlton.

Charles B. Haskell, 68, retired educator, died 3 December 1959 at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, after an illness of six months. Born in Pittsfield, Maine, he was a retired teacher of laboratory physics at the University of Connecticut, a subject he taught earlier at the University of New Hampshire. He attended Maine Central Institute, where he later serving as sub master. In 1913 he graduated from Bowdoin College, and in the same year captained its track team. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

Mr. Haskell had also been principal of Abbott School, Leavitt Institute, South Portland (Maine) High School and Milton High School.

Surviving were two daughters; Priscilla Libby of Los Angeles, and Martha Pushard of Wiscasset, Maine; a son, David Haskell; a sister, Miss Ethel Haskell of Boston; and brother, Orin S. Haskell of Schenectady, NY. Another sister, Mrs. Elise Atherton of Boston, died a week earlier.

Arthur D. Manley, 72, of 155 Retreat Ave., died Thursday at his home. Born in Albany N.Y., he lived in the Hartford area most of his life. Until his retirement two years ago he was a clerk at the main branch of the Hartford Post Office for 18 years. Previously he was a contract carpenter for many years. He was a member of the Carpenter's Union, the United Federation of Postal Clerks and the Order of Eagles, Hartforf lodge.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Julia Hodum Manley; a daughte, Mrs. Elmer Gibson of Manchester; a sister, Mrs. Anna Fredericks of Crystal Lake; two grandchildren, David Gibson and Eleanor Gibson, both of Manchester.


77106. Frederick Harrison Manley

Frederick H. Manley, 68, of 947 Asbury Ave, Ocean city, well known here in Millville through his affiliation with the Millville Lodge of Elks and Crippled Kiddies activities, died Saturday in Shore Memorial.

The deceased was a master plumber in Ocean city for 41 years and for several years served as plumbing inspector for that city. A veteran of World War I, he served with the U.S. Army corps of Engineers as a second lieutenant. He was wounded in the Argonne Fores. He served as a clerk in the State Senate in the 1930's.

In addition to his membership in the local Elks lodge, he was a member of Philadelphia Lodge 444, F and AM; Morgan-Rank Post, American Legion, of Ocean city, and the Ocean City Veterans of Foeeign Wars.

Surviving are his wife, Clara; one son, Frederick Jr. of Norman, Okla; two daughters, Mrs. Robert French, of Ocaen City, and Mrs. Edward A, Carroll, of Wayne, Pa.; a brother, Howard, of Texas, and six grandchildren.

Roland J. Sawyer, 76, of Edgartown, a retired government worker and former reporter for the Christian Science Monitor died unexpectedly Sept. 8 at home.

Mr. Sawyer was born in Bangor, Maine and graduated from the University of New Hampshire.

Mr. Sawyer was a writer and correspondent for the Chrstian Science Monitor from 1937 to 1955. He then worked for the federal government in Washington as first information officer for the General Accounting Office until his retirement in 1980. He then moved to Edsgartown.

Mr. Sawyer was still active with the Christian Science Monitor, occasionally editing books.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist and a volunteer for Dukes Coubty Historical Society in Martha's Vineyard.

He was a US Navy veteran of World War II.

He leaves a son, Jonathan Sawyer of Boston; two daughters, Jennifer Stix of Edgartown and Jessica Sawyer of Rockville, Md.; and five grandchildren.

Alden H. Sawyer Sr., 89, of Portland died Saturday at a local nursing home.

He was born in Bangor, a son of Harold C. and Marian Hart Sawyer, attended schools there and graduated from Bangor High School. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick and the Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University.

On June 7, 1930, he married Gayle Morgan of Westfield, N.J. Mrs. Sawyer died Oct. 30.

Mr. Sawyer was associated with Portland-area banks from 1931 to 1970. He was president of Maine National Bank, retiring in 1970.

He was a former president of the Maine Bankers Association from 1961 to 1962, former president of Corporate Fiduciaries Association of Maine, and a former corporator (1945-78) and trustee (1959-78) of Portland Savings Bank.

Mr. Sawyer served as chairman of stockholders advisory committee of Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in 1964, was a former chairman of the Bowdoin College Alumni Fund and a former president of Bowdoin College Alumni Council. He also seved Bowdoin College as an overseer (1954-67), trustee (1967-78) and treasurer (1967-78).

He received the Bowdoin Alumni Service Award in 1942 and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1978.

Mr. Sawyer was a member of the Portland School Committee (1946 to 1955), a director of Portland YMCA, a treasurer of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and a former secretary of the Portland Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Surviving are two sons, Alden H. Jr. and Olin M., both of Falmouth; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

DEXTER AND GUILFORD- James K. Edes, 87, passed away in his sleep at his home in Dexter on August 24, 2008. He was born in Guilford on June 24, 1921, the son of Dana H. and Maybelle (Sawyer) Edes. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Giles) Edes.

He was an active member of the Universalist Church in Dexter and Guilford, the Civil Air Patrol, Dexter Municipal Golf Course, Dexter Areo Club, American Legion, a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Air Force in North Africa and Italy, helped install the cable television pole lines in Dexter without pay, led the effort to keep Plummer Hospital opened, and was a pilot and airplane mechanic restoring his last airplane at the age of 83. Before retirement, he was an executive with Guilford Industries, Amos Abbott Co., and Miller industries, and always concerned for workers.

He is survived by three children, Rev. Mary Edes-Kull and Dr. Stephen Kull of Silver Lake, N.H., Daniel Edes PhD. of Rochester, NY, and Joseph Edes M. Ed. of Dexter; his sister, Edith Allen, wife of the late William Allen of Ellsworth; his brother in-law and wife Frank and Susie Giles, and Joyce Giles, wife of the late Billy Giles, all of Unadilla, GA; three grandchildren, Eliza Camire, Kelsey Camire, and Christopher Edes; and many nieces and nephews in whom he took an active interest.

He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, daughter-in-law Ellen West Edes, and two sons, Michael (infant), and William Edes.

DEXTER - Dorothy G. Edes, 79, died March 28, 2003, at a Dexter healthcare facility. She was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Villa Rica, Ga., daughter of William H. and Winnie (Sewall) Giles. She was an active member of the Universalist Church in Guilford and Dexter, the Universalist Unorganized Ladies, and the Dexter Municipal Women's Golf Association. In previous years she was a member of the Zephyrus Club in Guilford and the Plummer Hospital Association in Dexter.

She is survived by her husband, James K. Edes of Dexter; two sons, Joseph Edes of Dexter and Daniel Edes of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Rev. Mary Giles Edes of Deerfield, N.H.; three grandchildren, Kelsey and Eliza Camire and Christopher Edes; a brother, Frank Giles of Unadilla, Ga.

She was predeceased by two sons, Michael (infant) and William Edes; and a brother, Bill S. Giles.


William C. Allen

ELLSWORTH FALLS �  William C. Allen, 86, died Sept. 6, 2005, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born April 29, 1919, in Portland, the son of Eugene and Edith A. (Swallow) Allen.

William lived in Dover-Foxcroft for many years, graduating from Foxcroft Academy in 1938. He later served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator on a C-47 aircraft. The main mission of his unit was dropping paratroopers on invasions, towing gliders and resupply missions. His unit participated in seven invasions.

After leaving the service he married Edith E. Edes on June 9, 1946. They had two sons.

In December of 1946 he went to work for New England Telephone and Telegraph Company with whom he stayed for 35 years. William was a member of the American Legion Chadbourne-Merrill Post No. 29 in Dover-Foxcroft for 60 years. He was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church in Dover-Foxcroft and later in Ellsworth Falls where he was a faithful longtime member of the Ellsworth Falls Union Congregational UCC Church. He was active in the Boy Scout program for more than 30 years and active as a director and past president of the Hancock County Homes Foundation, which provided housing for the elderly.

In his retirement he and his wife traveled considerably in the west and were also fortunate to have visited Ireland, Scotland and Alaska. His retirement years at home were often spent at Camp Hatetoquitit at Lake Onawa in the township of Elliotsville. This island had been in his wife's family since 1897.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith E. Allen; two sons, David Allen and his wife, Karen, of Ellsworth, Jonathan Allen of Penobscot; four grandchildren, James, Katrina, Dana and Thomas.

Albert Collings Jr., 84, of Winding Lane, died Monday at Mercy Hospital. He was a 30-year painting and decorating contractor at Albert Collings & Son Painting Co., which was started by his father in 1913. He retired in 1977. A lifelong resident, he attended city schools and received a general educational diploma at the age of 55. He went on to attend American International College. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church on Concord Terrace and also attended the Church in the Acres on Wilbraham Road. He was a summer lay preacher in West Brookfield. He belonged to the Lake Wickaboag Boat Club in West Brookfield, the Hampden Masonic Lodge for 56 years, the All-Scottish Rite Bodies and the Melha Temple Shrine, in which he was a member of the Arab Patrol.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, the former Ina A. Kennedy; a son, Albert F. "Fred" of Somers, Conn.; three daughters, Kathleen Barrus of New Milford, Conn., Judith Hudson of Wellesley and Nancy Morse of Plymouth; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

SPRINGFIELD - Ina A. Collings, 92 of Grayson Drive died Friday, May 30th at her home. She was born in Springfield, March 25, 1916 the daughter of the late William J. and Agnes (Stephenson) Kennedy.

She attended Springfield schools graduating from The High School of Commerce. Mrs. Collings attended the Church in the Acres, Baptist. She and her late husband, Albert Collings owned and operated the Albert Collings & Sons Painting and Decorating.

Mrs. Collings is survived by her son, Albert F. Collings of West Brookfield, 3 daughters, Kathleen Barrus of New Milford, CT, Judith Hudson of Waltham, MA, and Nancy Morse of Plymouth, MA, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
