November 9, 2010CAMDEN - Carrie May Knight, 102, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Windward Gardens, Camden, after only one month of declining health. She had been a resident of Camden for 82 years and had spent several weeks at Windward Gardens. Born June 9, 1908, in South Brooks, she was the daughter of Bertie and Rose Emma (Jones) Small.
A 1927 graduate of Belfast High School, Carrie received her teaching degree from Farmington State Normal College.
In 1928 she married Arthur Knight in Lincolnville.
Once her children were high school age, she went to work at Phillipine Art Crafts, Camden, making baby clothes. Mrs. Knight also worked at the Sandwich Shop for several years, which was then located where Marriner's Restaurant is today. She was employed as an assembler at Tibbetts Industries, where she worked for 18 years, retiring at the age of 72. Her hobbies included bowling at Camden YMCA and Lucky Strike Lanes. An expert at hooking wool rugs, Mrs. Knight won first place at Union Fair twice. She spent many happy days with The Hookers, a group of women who gathered at Laverne Dickson's home in Waldoboro, to hook rugs. Mrs. Knight was an avid gardener and enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens doing it all by hand. She enjoyed attending antique shows, flea markets, lawn sales, collecting sugar shells and anything that took her fancy. Mrs. Knight looked forward to attending Belfast/Crosby High School Alumni banquets annually and was honored this year by Josephine Grady as the oldest living alumni. In 2009 she was the recipient of the Boston Post Cane by the town of Camden.
Surviving are her two children, Dorothy K. Lewis of Camden and Charles Knight of Dover-Foxcroft; six grandchildren, Denise Thibault of Standish, Barry Lewis of Lavernia, Texas, Barbara Bowden of Elgin, Okla., Martha Lewis of Westfield, Mass., Suzanne Bowden of Camden and Mark Lewis of West Springfield, Mass.; several great-grandchildren; a great-nephew, Richard Currier and his wife, Johanna, of Barre, Vt.; and several cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Knight, in 1962; a grandson, Eric Lewis; a son-in-law, Emery Lewis, and a daughter-in-law, Shirley Knight.
