RANCHER KILLS ILL WIFE, TURNS GUN ON SELF-SONS FIND BODIES OF PARENTS AFTER TLEPHONE FROM FATHER-PENNED TWO NOTES-MERCY DEATH AND SUICIDE DECISION IS REAVEALED IN LETTER-

Coroner J.J. Orelli today described the deaths of Mrs. Julia Ann Lorain, 75, and her husband Charles Alfred Lorain, 75, Green Valley rancher, as a mercy slaying and suicide. He said the suffering of Mrs. Lorain from an incurable ailment drove the husband to kill her and to take his own life with a .32 caliber revolver.

-HAND HOMESTEAD LAND-
Mrs. Lorain had been bedridden for more than a year and in the last two days was unable to recognize anyone. The two sons of the couple had grown and gone from the ranch in Green Valley, which Lorain homesteaded more than fifty years ago. Early yesterday Lorain went to his wife's bedroom put the revolver to her head and pressed the trigger. She died instantly.

- TELEPHONED TO SON-
Then, without haste, Lorain straightened up the house, fed the livestock, tied up the dog and telephoned to his son, Dan Lorain of 2035 Markham Way, Sacramento. "Your mother has passed away." he said. "Get Warren (the other son, also of Sacramento) and come home.

- PENNED TWO NOTES-

Lorain then penned two notes, one containing instructions on collecting rents due from tenants in nearby Folsom. He added a postscript: "Keep the dog tied up. He eats the eggs." In the other he wrote: "I have done all I can and can do no more. I want to end her suffering." Then Lorain lay down beside the body of his wife and killed himself. The brothers went to Green Valley and found the bodies of their parents in bed, the gun between them.
- FUNERAL TOMORROW-

"FRIGHTFUL DEATH OF BERT RUST
The sudden and cruel death of Bert Rust at Beach's saw mill Wednesday evening has added another name to the long list of those who have met tragic deaths in this county within a few weeks. No one better deserved to live than did this young man, and his untimely death is sincerely regretted by the whole community.

Mr. Rust had been a trusted employee of S. G. Beach for twelve years, and was engaged in scaling logs. A few minutes before 6 o'clock he was talking with Jud Young near the bottom of the log chute and both decided to wash and go to dinner. Something started a huge log that had lodged temporarily above, and it commenced rolling toward him, and, in jumping to escape that one, another was set rolling and the unfortunate man was caught between the two, despite the frantic effort of Young to catch hold of him. His neck was broken, but his body and head were not badly crushed.

Albert Rust was one of the seven sturdy sons of Wm. W. Rust, of Green Valley, where he was born not quite 35 years ago.

About fourteen years ago he married Miss Carrie Wulff, a member of another representative family of the western side of the county, and besides his wife, he leaves one young son to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father.

The brothers are, Wallace, Rust, who is employed as driver for Beach; Thomas Rust, of Sacramento; Wm. Rust, the blacksmith of this city; C. S. Rust, of St. Helena and John Rust, of Los Angeles. The sisters are Mrs. C. A. Lorrain and Mrs. J. W. Fleming, of Green Valley, and Mrs. W. H. Sexton.

The deceased was a member of Court Confidence, No 117, Foresters of America, under whose auspices the funeral will occur on Sunday, June 30th at 2 p.m. at the family residence on Sacramento street, with services conducted by Rev. Thos. P. Boyd."
