Born in Chicago, he came here in 1991 from DeKalb, Ill., where he was a piano assembler for Wurlitzer Piano Co. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include a sister, Marian Brean, Chicago; several nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Houghtaling, Dorothy E., 93, of Hart, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility. She was born Sept. 3, 1908 in Illinois the daughter of Ralph and Emma Potter.

She married Allen Houghtaling in 1946. He passed away Jan. 30, 1998.

Mrs. Houghtaling lived in Illinois many years. She moved to Wexford County in 1948 and lived there until moving to her home east of Hart in 1972. She had attended Hart United Methodist Church. She enjoyed raising and selling flowers and playing pinochle with friends.

Mrs. Houghtaling is survived by her children, Dorothy Fessenden of Shelby, and Fred (Doris) Fessenden of Hart; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her sons, Robert "Donald" Nelson, and Max and Ted Fessenden; brother, Robert Potter; and sisters, Grace Hubbard, and Ruth Stokes.

Dorothy L. Fessenden, 84, of Shelby, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 in Shelby. She was born Nov. 20, 1925 in White Cloud.

She married Kenneth Fessenden July 18, 1945 in Shelby. Mrs. Fessenden was employed at Westfield-Sommers in Hart from 1962 to 1978. She worked at Gray and Company from 1978 until her retirement in 2002. She attended Faith Lutheran Church in Whitehall.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her cats, her flowers and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sept. 3, 1987.

Mrs. Fessenden is survived by her children, Janice Kokx of Hart, Claire (Carl) Dennison of Hart, Marge (Al) Ramthun of Shelby, Barbara Domalavage of Pensacola, Fla., Helen (Kim) Hettmansperger of Hesperia, Diane (Larry) Rood of Shelby, Linda (Mark) Tanner of Cadillac and Ted (Liz) Fessenden of Crystal Valley; her sister-in-law, Barbara Fessenden of Muskegon; brother, Fred (Doris) Fessenden of Hart; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Fessenden of Shelby, Robert Putney of Shelby, Leroy and Freida Tanner of Shelby and Claire and Barbara Fessenden of New Era; also 25 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 10 great-greatgrandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Fessenden, parents, Allen and Dorothy Houghtaling and stepfather, Russell Fessenden, and brothers, Donald Robert Nelson, Max Fessenden and Ted Fessenden.

Barbara Ann (Webber) Fessenden was born on September 19, 1934 in Shelby, Michigan to the late Walter William Waldo Webber and the late Laura Anna (Cook) Webber and passed away at home under the loving care of her family on July 19, 2019.

On August 8, 1952 she married Max Earnest Fessenden and he preceded her in death on August 12, 1992.

Barbara is survived by two sons, Stuart Lee (Tracy) Fessenden and Dennis J (Kittie) Fessenden, Jacqueline Sells (David) Homann; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Norman (Valencia) Webber; close friends Marlene Hudson, and Cheryl Murphy-Hopkins, former daughters in law, Leslie Borgman and Carol Terwilliger.

Along with her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by two children, Gregory Max Fessenden, Denise Lynn Corsi; siblings, Doris (Joseph) Bates, Harold "Mike" (Ruby Jane) Webber, Betty (Eugene) Campagna, and her twin sister, Phyllis Cook Webber.

Barbara loved her family, friends and her faith. She was a superb cook who loved dice, playing cards, especially "chicken foot". She was retired from Howmet as a wax inspector.

\\Muskegon - Mrs. Donna Mae Arsnoe, age 74, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2006. She was born in Muskegon on May 30, 1931 to Fay and Helen (Pleau) Howard, and was a life resident. She was previously employed by Christian Care Convalescent Home.

On July 31, 1954, she married Charles Robert Arsnoe, and he preceded her in death on June 3, 1985. She was also preceded in death by 1 son, Terry Arsnoe.

She is survived by 5 children, Sharon Williams, Linda (Paul) Tejchma, Debra (Michael) Jozsa, Jack Arsnoe and Robert (Joan) Arsnoe; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; her twin brother, Donald Howard of Florida; and special niece, Joyce Bridenstine.

Muskegon - Dale W. Barnhardt, age 86, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Dale was born on December 24, 1927 in Muskegon, MI. He served in the United States Navy during WWII while stationed in the Philippines. He was a member of the IBEW Local 275 for over 60 years.

Dale will be lovingly remembered by his children: Randy (Penny) Barnhardt of Battle Creek, Michael Barnhardt of Bitely, Gary (Carrie) Dill of Muskegon, Rick (Margo) Dill of Grand Haven, and Willard (Sharon) Dill of Fruitport; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers: Larry Barnhardt of Gobles, MI., Patrick Barnhardt of Melbourne, FL; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents; his wife, Oweda Barnhardt; siblings: Michael Barnhardt, Patsy Barnhardt and Ronald Barnhardt.

Glenn A. Arsnoe of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side, Sunday 23, 2020 in St. Petersburg. He was 81.

Glenn was born May 6, 1938 in Ferry, Michigan: the beloved son of the late Arthur and Ruth Arsnoe.

He was a graduate of Muskegon High School, Muskegon, Michigan; Class of 1956. Glenn continued his education receiving multiple degrees before ultimately attaining his Doctorate in Theology from Andersonville Seminary of Cambria, Georgia. Throughout the years of his ministry, he pastored churches in Michigan, Virginia and Florida and ultimately served the community at the Irving Park Baptist Church in St Petersburg.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Charles Arsnoe.

Glenn is survived by his loving wife of 63+ years, Emily M. Arsnoe and their children; Randy Arsnoe (Cathy), Cindy DuBois (Bruce) and Ted Arsnoe (Toni). He is also survived by his sister, Louise Diem, nine loving grandchildren and 10 beautiful great grandchildren.

Edgar Dale Hackney, on Sunday, June 1, 2008, Edgar went peacefully to the Lord, with his family by his side.

Dale, was born February 22, 1921 in Columbus, Kansas, to Stella Hackney.

He worked at a filling station in Oswego and did some farming before his family came west. Moving to Compton and later to Baldwin Park. He met his future wife, Mildred in Monrovia, who was by his side for 66 years. He served in WWII, in the Army at the Ba ttle of the Bulge.

He has three sons, Dale Jr., Jack and Joey (who passed as a baby). He was blessed with three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a resident of Baldwin Park for 65 years. If you were ever in the mood for a good fishing story or a hunting tale, or just some family history, you stopped by Dale's where he was sitting on the back porch ready to share.

Norman Gene Potter born on April 4, 1931 in Flint, Michigan went to be with the Lord on February 22, 2021. He was a loving, gentle, and supportive husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.

Norman left Michigan to enlist in the United States Army during the Korean War and served his country honorably in Korea as a Radio Repairman with an artillery unit. After active-duty time he married and worked out at Pensacola Naval Air Station as an Avionics Instrument Repair Technician and Instructor until his retirement.

Norman was fervent about his belief and faith in God and served his churches in many roles through the years.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda Potter of 13 years; surviving stepchildren include daughter, Margie Graham of Pensacola, son, Rueben Abell of Kansas City, daughter, Betty Joann McArther (Chris) also of Kansas City; and eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by son, Darryl Abell.

Norman was also predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Dorena Mary Potter.

He is survived by his children, Maurice Potter (Debra) of Portland, OR and Martin Potter (Charlotte) of Ephrata, WA; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was born in Des Allemands, LA, lived a few years in Columbus, GA, and had resided in Pensacola since 1957. Dorena and Norman worshipped at Olive Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Norman; sons, Maurice, of Portland, OR and Martin of Fife, WA; a brother, Naaman DuFrene, of Columbus, GA; a sister, Claire Hancock, of Pensacola, FL; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Foster Dixon Potter, Esq. of Muskegon, Michigan passed from this life and into his family's hearts on Father's Day June 18, 2017 at the age of 84.

Foster was born to Paul and Geneva Potter in Flint, Michigan on October 20, 1932.

He graduated from Davison High School in 1950 and on October 28, 1950 married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Betty (Wigard) Potter.

They were married for 66 years and had four sons; Dan, Tom, Mike and David.

They lived in the Flint area for the first 20 years of their marriage. Foster worked for AC Spark Plug as a designer and product tester while completing his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and then attending Wayne State University's Law School earning his Juris Doctorate in June 1970. Upon graduation Foster accepted a position with the law firm of Poppen Street & Sorenson in Muskegon, Michigan and later was a partner in the law firm O'Toole, Stevens, Johnson, Knowlton, Potter & Rolf. He practiced law in the Muskegon area for over 40 years and was a member of the State Bar of Michigan. Foster was an avid golfer and belonged to White Lake Country Club for many years and was a member of Muskegon Country Club for over 40 years. He enjoyed playing golf and cribbage with his friends "the owners" at the club, but his greatest joy came from playing golf with his sons. They played together at many golf courses in Michigan and Florida and traveled to Scotland and Ireland to play where the game was born. There was always a small wager involved and usually a Manhattan or two after the golf. Foster also enjoyed aviation and was an avid pilot with his instrument rating, owning several airplanes over his 30 years as a pilot. Foster enjoyed all sports, especially the University of Michigan football and basketball programs, the Detroit Tigers, and the always frustrating Detroit Lions.

Foster is preceded in death by son, Tom and brother, Don, and is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty; three sons, Dan, Mike and David; daughters-in-law, Cheri Potter and Susan (Ireland) Potter; brother, Norman; beloved grandchildren, Jennifer (Potter) McCord and husband Damon, Jason Potter and wife Tanya, Miles Potter, Lindsey Potter, Brandi (Potter) Sherman and husband Chad, Linda (Potter) Taylor and husband Robert; extended family, Eric and Jena Tankersley and Tracy Tankersley; greatgrandchildren, Caedan and Kieran McCord, Liam and Rowan Potter, Chase Sherman, Kyli and Kaleb Taylor, Rebekah, Jacob, Jonathan Colon and Eric Tankersley, and twins, Brooke and Breanne Chaney.

Potter, Donald "Don" P. of Blissfield Age 69, died on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at his home.

He was born April 16, 1946 in Flint, Michigan to Paul and Geneva Dixon Potter.

Don served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War. He worked for general motors for 30 years as a robotics engineer. He enjoyed building his extensive railroad layout of Lionel trains and frequenting the Blissfield Coney Island Restaurant to meet up with friends and enjoy conversation.

Don is survived by two daughters, Michelle Potter Stables of Davison, MI and Tonya Potter of Davison, MI.; two brothers, Norman (Dorene) Potter of Pensacola, FL. Foster (Betty) Potter of Norton Shores, MI.; three grandchildren Dylan Horton of, Thomaston, GA, Ashly Taylor of Burton, MI. and Matthew Taylor of Boston, MA.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Virginia Potter, 74, 530 Porter Ave., died at 4:05 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, where she had been a patient since June 11, after an illness of several months.

Mrs. Potter was born Aug. 28, 1913, in Joplin, where she lived most of her life. She moved to Springfield one year ago to live with a daughter due to ill health. She worked for 10 years at Joplin Supply Company, retiring in July 1975. She was a member of South Street Christian Church at Springfield and was a former member of South Joplin Christian Church.

She was a 50m year member of Ruth Chapter No. 177, Order of Easter Star, and Azotus Chapter No. 5, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was past president of the Azotus Club. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution/ She was a former of the Joplin Women's Club.

She married LeRoy "Larry" Potter Sept. 26, 1948, in Joplin. He died April 3, 1955.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Potter, Springfield.

Viola A. Nelson, 99, Kenmare, ND, formerly of Flaxton, ND, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013, at the Kenmare Community Hospital.

Viola Andrea Carlson was born April 8, 1913, the daughter of Jens and Margaret Johanna (Winquist) Carlson in Norma, ND.

She was raised and educated in Norma, and graduated from Kenmare High School in 1931. In 1935, she attended Christy's Beauty School in Bismarck. She moved to Flaxton in June of 1937, where she worked as a beautician until 1942. During this time she also worked as a cook at the Flaxton Hotel.

Viola married Neil Potter June 1, 1941, in Norma, ND. They made their home in Flaxton, ND, where they raised their family. They were divorced in 1952.

She then worked as a cook at the Country Boy Truck Stop, where she cooked a meal for Merle Haggard.

Viola married Victor Nelson December 19, 1968, in Flaxton. They made their home in Flaxton, where she continued to work at the Country Boy Truck Stop. During this time, she wrote several news articles for the Burke County Tribune and Divide County Journal. Victor passed away June 8, 1981. Following her husband's death, she continued to reside in Flaxton until moving to the Kenmare Baptist Home in May of 2006. She was very active with all the activities there and continued to reside there until July of 2012, when she moved to the Kenmare Skilled Nursing Unit at the Kenmare Community Hospital. She enjoyed it when many members of the Baptist Home & Hospital staff called her "Grandma". She was a member of the United Lutheran Church Ladies aid of Flaxton, the Flaxton Senior Citizens, the Pulltogether Homemakers Club of Flaxton for 37 years, and the Flaxton American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. She served as an officer in some capacity in all of these groups. Viola enjoyed music, and was able to practice with the Dakota Playboys on several occasions. She also enjoyed baking and decorating wedding cakes for many years. One of the other things she was well known for were her donuts. Viola also enjoyed doing artwork and craftwork, as she won many prizes at the Burke County Fair and the North Dakota State Fair. She was active with the Burke County Fair as an exhibit hall hostess.

Surviving family includes: children, James (Linda) Potter, Kenmare, Marilyn Carter, Wahpeton, ND, Gene (Jane) Potter, Minot ND and Mark (Brenda) Potter, Fairfax, OK; grandsons, Jeff, Justin, Timothy, Kurt, Jerry, Bruce, Anthony, and Harry; granddaughters, Renee, Michele, Kim, Tammy, Teresa, Tara, Tiphanie, Tanya, Kaylee, Ann, Tabitha, and Jennifer; 39 great-grandchildren; 7 great great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor; grandson, Troy Holliday; great-grandson, John Holliday; brothers, Andrew (Elda) Carlson and Arthur (Hazel) Carlson; and sister, Edith (Regner) Hansen.

James "Jim" Potter, 74, Kenmare, ND, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017, in his home.

James Neil Potter was born July 29, 1942, the son of Neil and Viola (Carlson) Potter, in Kenmare, ND. He was raised and educated in Flaxton and graduated from Flaxton High School in 1960.

Jim enlisted in the United States Navy June 3, 1960. He served aboard the USS Nereus AS 17. He was honorably discharged July 23, 1963, as an Electricians Mate 2nd Class.

Jim was once married to Gloria White. From this union, two children, Jeff and Renee, were born.

Jim married Linda Gravesen October 14, 1966, in Kenmare. They made their home in Kenmare, where he worked for Leroy Nelson with his horse barn, Ingerson Manufacturing, the City of Kenmare, Robert Nore House Moving, as a carpenter for Don Nore and was a self-employed carpenter for 30 years.

He was a member of the Kenmare American Legion Post #64 and the Kenmare Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7049 and served on the Military Honors Color Guard for over 40 years.

He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, especially Finches, hunting, fishing, watching the Minnesota Twins, and had compassion for all animals. After watching the Kentucky Derby for over 40 years, he and Linda finally were able to attend the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby in May of 2012. This completed one of the many items on his bucket list.

His loving family includes: wife of 50 years, Linda, Kenmare; children, Jeff (Marie) Potter, Baltimore, MD, Renee Offord and her fianc, Charles "Buck" Wheat Jr., Baltimore, MD, Michele (Jim) Marshall, Las Cruces, NM; Justin (Nicky) Potter, Souris, ND; grandchildren, Nicholas, Jeffrey Jr., Jonathan, Jennifer, Phillip, Kaitlyn, Dylan, and one grandson on the way; five great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Carter, Wahpeton, ND; brothers, Gene (Jane) Potter, Minot, ND and Mark (Brenda) Potter, Bartlesville, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Neil; and mother, Viola Nelson.
