July 24, 1997Hilda R. Austad died Wednesday at her home with her sister, Reitha McGaughan, by her side. She was a former resident of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Born in Burlington, a daughter of Guy A. and Josie May Richardson, she graduated from Burlington High School in 1926, and married Arthur M. Austad on Nov. 20, 1937. He predeceased her on Feb. 17, 1967.
The Austads made their home in Cape Elizabeth until after their children were married and Mr. Austad died. Mrs. Austad then moved back to Burlington and lived out her years in her family's home with her sister. In 1974, Mrs. Austad retired as secretary for the Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.
She was past patron of Longfellow Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, of Portland, Maine, a member of the Burlington Business & Professional Women's Organization and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington.
Surviving are a daughter, Gretchen Becker of Underhill; a son, Jon Austad of Winchester, Mass.; a sister, Reitha McGaughan of Burlington; three grandchildren, Rachel Becker of Aiea, Hawaii, Rebecca Becker of Burlington, and Joseph Becker of Underhill.
