CARIBOU - Arlene B. MacConaghy, 98, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at a Caribou hospital. Arlene was born July 26, 1911, in Madison, the daughter of Luther H. and Alice E. Foster.

Arlene graduated from Madison High School in 1929, and Maine School of Commerce, now Mid-State College, in 1930. Arlene worked 66 years for the Law Offices of Limell, Choate & Webber as a legal secretary. She had a great love of golf and bridge, both of which she played very competitively. Even in her 90s, Arlene could play nine holes of golf and score in the 50s.

Arlene is survived by her son, Joseph Hatch and his wife, Sharon, of Norway; her daughter, Alice Roy and her husband, Robert, of Caribou; her stepson, Lloyd MacConaghy and his wife, Mary, of Bronson, Fla.; and her stepdaughter, Sharon LeBlond and her husband, Rick, of Bronson, Fla. She is also survived by her sister, Alice Murphy of Fort Collins, Colo.; grandsons, James Hatch and his wife, Heather, of South Paris, Eric Hatch of Sanford, Tony Roy and his companion, Kati Bell, of Caribou and Kendall Roy and his wife, Rachelle, of Mapleton; and six great-grandsons.

In addition to her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her husbands, James Hatch, in 1965, and John MacConaghy, in 1986.

Chester Heights resident Thelma Haskell Staus, 91, of Chester Heights, a homemaker, died April 19 at Riddle Memorial Hospital.

Born in Chester, Mr. Staus was a resident of Chester Heights for 40 years. Previously, she was a resident of Chester and Aston. She was a graduate of Chester High School, Class of 1934, and attended Taylor Business School in Philadelphia. She was a member of the Jr. Women's Auxiliary of Crozer Hospital for 28 years. Also, she was a member of the Aston Township Lioness Club for 25 years, and a member of the Del-Valley Square Dance Association for 20 years.

Her husband of 64 years, Frank A. Staus, died in 2001. She was the mother of the late Carol Schaaf. Survivors: Son, Frank H. Staus of West Chester; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

RUMFORD �  Another angel has been called home. Irene M. Newell, 89, of Riverside Park Road, Mexico, passed away on Friday, Dec. 28, at Rumford Hospital, following a brief illness, with loving family at her side.

She was born in Rumford, Feb. 22, 1923, a daughter of Lawrence and Rose (Arsenault) McPhee. Irene was a graduate of Dixfield High School. She was employed as a product inspector at Diamond Match in West Peru for many years. Irene was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior.

She loved playing bingo, playing cards with her friends and doing word puzzles. Irene was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. She most of all loved spending time with her family, especially at her daughter Debra and son-in-law, Dennis' camp on Long Lake in Bridgton.

She will be deeply missed and in our hearts forever.

Surviving are her children, Robert L. Foreman of Peru, Lawrence Newell of North Conway, N.H., Debra Hamel and husband, Dennis, of Bridgton; and daughter-in-law, Donna Foreman and companion, Ed Merrifield; a brother, Ernest McPhee and wife, Esther, of Rumford; eight grandchildren, Kathleen Miller and Kerry Conti, Rebecca Foreman Janjic and husband, Aleks, Kelly Smith and husband, Michael, Wendy Foreman and companion, Michael Bragg, Michael Foreman, Meagan Foreman, Matthew Foreman and wife, Terri; and six great-grandchildren, Hayden, Jackson, Natalie, Kevin, Keegan and Mason.

She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Lundie Conti, her second husband, Lev Foreman, and husband, Charles Newell; three sons, James Conti, Michael Foreman and Charles Newell III; three brothers, Melvin, Arthur and Everett McPhee; and three sisters, Olive Comeau, Eva Perry and Dorothy Thoreau.

FARMINGTON �  Persis Lane Manchester, 97, of Jay, died early Monday morning, July 19, at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She previously had resided at Orchard Park Living Center for the past two years.

Born in North Fayette, Dec. 15, 1906, one of 12 children born to Emery and Rose (Haskell) Lane, she received her education in local schools and graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1925.

She then worked at the Turner Rug Factory before she became a nanny for her widowed sister's three children. She attended Bryant Stratton Business College and graduated in 1932.

Mrs. Manchester worked for Providence Washington Insurance Co., where she worked as a supervisor until her retirement at the age of 62.

On June 1, 1946, she married Roi Manchester in Providence, R.I., at Mt. Pleasant Church. He died Jan. 9, 1969. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and the subordinate grange in Rhode Island and later transferred to Wilson Grange 321, where she had received her 75-year pin. She also was a member of Excelsior Pomona Grange.

Mrs. Manchester was active in the Bartlett Memorial United Methodist Church, where she cooked and cut pies for grange and church suppers. She enjoyed her flower gardens and working on grandmothers garden quilts.

Although Mrs. Manchester never had children of her own, she always remembered birthdays of her nieces and nephews with cards and gifts and she was always eager to help others in need.

Survivors include a brother, Roger Lane, of Fayette; a sister, Eunice Lane Robinson, of Fayette; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Jennie Kay, Gladys Quimby, Stella Baker, Marion Allen, Muriel Morse, and two baby sisters; two brothers, Wesley Lane and Ronal Lane; and several nieces and nephews.

Farmington �  Eunice O. Bowen Robinson, 92, a resident of North Road, Fayette, died Sunday, December 12th on her 92nd birthday at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was born December 12, 1918 in Fayette, the daughter of Emery O. and Rose M. (Haskell) Lane.

She attended school in Fayette, Kents Hill and was a 1936 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. Eunice married Al Laplante, they later divorced. She married Edward Bowen in 1950, he passed away in 1983, then she married Harry Robinson in 1985, and he passed away in 1993.

Eunice was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and devoted her life caring for her family. She also volunteered her time to her community serving on the Five Town Bicentennial Committee; treasurer for the North Fayette Community Church; served as a SAD 36 school board member representing the town of Fayette; and a member of the Fayette Historical Society. Eunice also filled in as a clerk for the town of Fayette until a new clerk was appointed. She loved making crafts and wreaths for different community fundraisers. She recently made two large wreaths to give to the churches for Christmas.

She is survived by her sons, Hayden Lane of Chester, NH., and his daughters, Faith and Michele, Roger Clayton Laplante of Nashua, NH., and Wesley Bowen and his wife Jennifer of Fayette and their children, Scott, Brandy and Savanna, two daughters, Pamela Sevigny and her husband Leo of Springfield, NH., Patricia Bowen of East Winthrop and her daughter, Amanda; stepsons, William, Phillip and Peter Bowen, Harry, Richard, Thomas, Patrick and John Robinson, stepdaughters, Viola Ridley, Jeannette McMillen, Lorraine Cheatham, Evelyn Ouellette, June Hebert, Joey Toothaker, Rae Marston Henderson, Michelle Whitney, Mary Greenman, Sandra Wilson and Pamela Nolan; her brother, Roger Lane of Fayette; many grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Wesley and Ronald Lane, and six sisters, Jennie Smith, Gladys Quimby, Stella Baker, Persis Manchester, Marion Allen and Muriel Morse.

FAYETTE �  Roger Nathaniel Lane was born at the Lane Farm in Fayette, Maine, on June, 28, 1922, to Emery Orson Lane and Rose Mabel Haskell; he died at age 96, on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Sandy River Rehabilitation in Farmington, Maine.

He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1940 and served in the United States Army Signal Intelligence Service (Southwest Pacific) from 1942-1946. Upon his return he worked at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Boston, Mass., and lived for many years on Beacon Hill.

He never married. In the 1980s, he retired and returned to North Jay, Maine. In 2003 he returned to live at the Lane Farm in Fayette where he resided until February.He was the record-keeper and Lane family historian for many years; with his cousin, Frank C. Lane, he co-wrote Ancestry and Descendants of James Lane of Hingham, Massachusetts published in 1966. He was a member of the Readfield, Fayette, and North Jay Historical Societies, the North Jay and Readfield Granges, and the North Fayette Community Church.

Mr. Lane was predeceased by his parents and his siblings: Jennie May, Wesley Orson, Gladys, Stella, Persis, Marion, Ronald Hayden, Muriel Arlene, and Eunice Ora. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.


Merritt E. Cutting

LEICESTER - Merritt E. Cutting, 85, of 125 Marshall St., a chemist for 36 years, a skilled gardener and a longtime community volunteer, was pronounced dead on arrival Friday in Memorial Hospital, Worcester, after he was stricken ill at home.

He leaves his wife of 15 years, Ann S. (Southwick) Cutting; a son, John A. Cutting of Barre; a daughter, Jane C. Longmire of Belmont; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

His first wife, Jessie (Taft) Cutting of Barre, died in 1981.

He was born in Cherry Valley, son of Robert A. and Mildred (Lamb) Cutting, and lived 41 years in Barre before returning to Leicester in 1982. He graduated from Leicester High School in 1930 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1934.

Mr. Cutting was a chemist at Barre Wool Combing Co. in South Barre for 36 years, retiring in 1974. He was a volunteer driver for many years for the Leicester Meals on Wheels program.

Mr. Cutting was a master gardener, a member of the Worcester County Horticultural Society in Boylston and a charter member of the New England Lily Society. He was a member of the Tech Old Timers Club and attended Leicester Federated Church. He was a member of the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester Heritage Preservation Society, Worcester Historical Society and Massachusetts Audubon Society.

BRIMFIELD / FT. LAUDERDALE Robert B. Taft, Jr., 87, of 1701 NE 26th. St., Ft. Lauderdale, died Wednesday, at Manor Pines Convalescent Home following an illness.

He was the husband of Elizabeth M. (Perry) Taft who died in 1989. He leaves a son, Robert B. Taft, III of Ft. Lauderdale, and a sister, Martha Lees of Somers, Ct.

He is predeceased by a sister, Jessie Cutting of Barre, MA.

Mr. Taft managed the W.E. Aubuchon Hardware Store in Palmer for 35 years, retiring in 1984. He was an Army veteran of WWII.

He was a member and past Master of the Thomas Lodge of Masons, AF & AM in Palmer, Past District Deputy Grand Master (19th. Masonic District), Palmer and Past Vestry Member at Christ Episcopal Church in Rochdale, MA.

Born in Leicester, he was the son of Robert B. Taft, Sr. and Florence (Lamson) Taft, and lived 40 years in Brimfield before moving to Ft. Lauderdale in 1994.

SOMERS, CT - Martha Craig (Taft) Lees, 91, a resident of Somers since 2001, and former longtime resident of Southbridge, MA died early Thursday morning, December 6, 2012 at Johnson Memorial Medical Center in Stafford.


She was born in Leicester, MA a daughter of the late Robert and Florence (Lamson) Taft and was a graduate of Leicester High School Class of 1939. She continued her education by receiving her degree from Becker Junior College in Worcester. Upon her graduation in 1941 from Becker, Martha accepted a position at Worcester Academy in the business office and soon after was promoted to secretary to the Head Master until she married.

Martha was a former active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Southbridge where she served on the church vestry and alter guild. She was an avid sports enthusiast who followed all the Boston sports teams and the PGA. Martha also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and playing numerous card games with family and friends. Her favorite pastime was spent nurturing, guiding, and building a special bond with each of her 11 grandchildren. It was during these wonderful years that she felt truly blessed and most fortunate.

Martha was the devoted wife of 52-years to the late Albert Lees, Jr. who died on July 8, 2001. She leaves six loving children, Lucinda "Cindy" May Pio and her husband Pat of Somers, CT, Albert "Toby" Craig Lees and his wife Sherri of Fairhaven, MA, Geraldine Benjamin and her husband Michael of Sturbridge, MA, Richard Matthew Lees and his wife Stephanie of Tulsa, OK, Thomas Arthur Lees of Fairhaven, MA and Betsey Sheehan and her husband Michael of Bolton, CT; eleven grandchildren, Blake, M.L., Pat, Chelsea, Nick, Mali, Paige, Hunter, Lexi, Paris and Caleigh; two great- grandchildren, Logan and Garrett; as well as several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Jessie Cutting and her brother, Robert Taft.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Clayton S. Bates, 79, of 1845 North West 6th Ave., formerly of Rockville, Conn., and Dudley, Mass., a former tool and die maker, died Friday in his home.

His first wife, Sylvia A. (Guertin) Bates, died in 1986. He leaves his wife, Irene (Chenevert) Bates; two sons, Bruce C. Bates of Fort Lauderdale and Richard S. Bates of Webster, Mass.; a daughter, Suzanne Allen of Homestead; a sister, Edith M. McKee of Dudley; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., son of Henry D. and Hazel J. (Scott) Bates, and lived 20 years in Dudley before moving to Rockville. He lived here since 1972. Mr. Bates was an Army veteran of World War II and formerly worked at Lewis Machine Shop in East Hartford, Conn.

Lucille was born in Worcester, MA on October 29, 1928, the daughter of Warren and Irene (Scott) Bates. Mrs. Austin grew up with her extended family on their farm in Dudley, MA. As a very young child she met a neighbor who became the "love of her life" and future husband, Richard. She attended and graduated from Bartlett High School, Webster, MA in 1946 and the Boston School of Dental Nursing in 1947.

After spending several years in Buffalo, NY and Pittsburgh, PA, Mrs. Austin and her husband moved to Keene in 1963 where they raised their family. Mrs. Austin worked for nearly 25 years at Keene YMCA and loved her interactions with the many Keene residents she met there before retiring in 1993. After her retirement, she volunteered at the American Red Cross and Cedarcrest, both located in Keene. She and Richard especially enjoyed watching their three sons play sports throughout high school and beyond. They were also frequent spectators at their grandchildren's' sporting and other school events. She cherished family gatherings, particularly during the holidays and summer barbeques. They enjoyed their retirement years spending the winter months in St. Augustine, FL as well as traveling the New Hampshire and Maine coast line.

Mrs. Austin was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Richard. Survivors include her three sons, Gary and his wife Corinne of Hooksett, NH; Brian and his wife Beverly of Grantham, NH; David and his wife Molly of Surry, NH; as well as her brother Howard, and his wife Sylvia of Dudley, MA; and her sister Claire (Polkraka) and her husband Ron of Falmouth, MA. She is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Gary's Jenn and Greg, Brian's Sarah and Kristina, and David's Kyle, Courtney, Sophie and Abby.


Richard Marsh Austin

KEENE -- Richard M. Austin, 86, of Keene, peacefully passed away April 17, 2014, at Maplewood Nursing Home after a period of declining health.He was born in Worcester, Mass., April 13, 1928, the son of James and Clara (Marsh) Austin.

Mr. Austin spent his childhood years growing up in Dudley, Mass., a neighbor to his "love of his life" and future wife, Lucille Bates.

Mr. Austin was a sports enthusiast. He and Lucille especially enjoyed watching their three sons play sports throughout high school and beyond. They were also frequent spectators at their grandchildren's sporting and other school events. He cherished family gatherings, particularly during the holidays and summer barbeques.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lucille (Bates) of Maplewood Nursing Home, Westmoreland, three sons, Gary and his wife Corinne of Hooksett, Brian and his wife Beverly of Grantham, and David and his wife Molly of Surry, a brother Robert and wife Pat of Summerfield, Fla. He is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Gary's Jenn and Greg, Brian's Sarah and Kristina, and David's Kyle, Courtney, Sophie and Abby.

Edward Tuck of Mascoma Street, Lebanon, NH and formerly of Hanover, died suddenly on (October 31, 2005). He was 77 years old. He was born on July 18, 1928 in Boston, MA, the son of the late John Tuck and Jessie (Maclanes) Tuck.

He grew up in Auburn, MA. Ed graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1946, Dartmouth College in 1950 and received his MBA from Boston University in 1961. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict as a Lieutenant,

Ed married the former Marlene Murphy on January 8, 1955 and together raised their five children in West Hartford.

In 1980, Ed retired from The Hartford Insurance Group where he worked as a mortgage officer in the real estate investment division. He and his wife soon moved back to Hanover, NH so he could be closer to his beloved Dartmouth College. In his retirement years Ed was involved in all aspects of life at Dartmouth. He frequented sporting events, cultural events, Class of 1950 events and enjoyed auditing classes. He took great pride in continuing his family's 150 plus year tradition of supporting Dartmouth and took particular pleasure in supporting the Tuck School of Business. In 2000, Dartmouth honored him with its Alumnus of the Year award. Ed was former trustee of the Renbrook School, the New Hampshire Historical Society and the Hartford Hospital. He was past Treasurer of the Hanover Historical Society, former secretary of the Hanover Lion's Club, past president of the Association of Historical Societies of New Hampshire, former vice president of the Amos Tuck Society and a member of the Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley. Ed held various offices in the Dartmouth Class of 1950, including president He was an active member of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College.

He is survived by his wife Marlene; his son Brian and his wife Barbara of Bloomfield, NJ; his four daughters, Karen Tuck of Rocky Hill, Barbara (Tuck) Sheriden and her husband Joseph also of Rocky Hill, Linda (Tuck) Isaacson and her husband John of Cumberland, ME and Katherine (Tuck) Higgins and her husband Jonathan also of Cumberland, ME. In addition he is survived by five grandchildren, Arwen, Arid, Rachel, Julia and Jacob.

He was predeceased by his half brother, John ''Jack'' Tuck.


Marlene Murphy

Marlene Tuck, 74, of Lebanon, NH formerly of Hanover, NH, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, (November 2, 2005) at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare in Hanover, NH. She was the wife of Edward Tuck who passed away on Monday, (October 31, 2005). She was born on February 12, 1931 in Indiana, the daughter of Richard and Bernice Murphy.

The former Miss Murphy married Edward Tuck on January 8, 1955. Together they raised five children, settling first in Wellesley Hills, MA, then in West Hartford, and eventually retiring to Hanover, NH. Marlene was an active member of the United Church of Christ at Dartmouth and the P.E.O. She performed volunteer work at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and spent many hours assisting the elderly in her community. She was also known as ''Mom away from home'' to many college students and their families. She was especially fond of loons and often marveled at their lonesome, mournful call. Marlene also enjoyed the accomplishments and company of her five grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Brian and his wife, Barbara of Bloomfield, NJ; and her daughters, Karen Tuck of Rocky Hill, Barbara (Tuck) Sheriden and her husband, Joseph of Rocky Hill, Linda (Tuck) Isaacson and her husband, John of Cumberland, ME and Katherine (Tuck) Higgins and her husband, Jonathan also of Cumberland, ME. Her grandchildren are Arwen, Ariel, Rachel, Julia and Jacob.
