August 8, 1958Mrs. Helen B. Davis, 60, of 18 Richardson street, died suddenly Thursday night while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Norman Walker, in Plaistow. She was born in Somerville, Mass., and had lived in Derry for many years before moving to Rochester.
Members of the family include her husband, Harold P. Davis of Rochester; three daughters, Mrs.Norman Walker of Plaistow, Mrs. Joe D. Seed of Littleton, Colo., and Mrs. Richard Haskell of Paris, Me.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Leslie M. Barnard of Somerville, Mass., and a sister Mrs. Ernest Howland of Woburn, Mass.

BURLINGTON - James H. Bates, 90, died at the Green Mountain Nursing Home on April 13, 2012. He was born in Boston, Mass. to the late Merritt and Florence Bates.
He graduated from Leavitt Institute in Turner, Maine in 1939 and the University of Maine in 1943. Following three years of service in the Army and Army Air Force during W.W.II, he completed his master's degree at the University of Maine. Jim worked for the Maine Tuberculosis & Health Association from 1948-1951. He then became the Executive Director of the Vermont Tuberculosis and Health Association in 1951. He joined the staff at the Office of the Dean of the UVM College of Medicine in 1958 and completed his career there in 1987. Throughout his long tenure at UVM, Jim was respected for his dedication and integrity, as well as for the support he gave to both colleagues and medical students.
Jim's family was the pride of his life. He was a devoted, gentle and caring son, husband, father and grandfather whose countless acts of love shall always be cherished by family members. His humility and his sense of humor helped endear Jim to all who knew him.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Joan) of Essex Junction; daughter, Brenda (Stuart Armstrong) of Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren, James Holway (Kerry) of Burlington, David Bates of Essex Junction, Michael Bates (Selvi) of Alexandria, Va., Lora Armstrong of Bristol, UK, and Rebekha Bates of Sarasota, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lora Bates; brother, Paul Bates; son, Brian Bates; and grandson, William Armstrong.
Jim's faith and compassion were reflected in his concern for the health and welfare of others. He was active with the Vermont Conference of Social Welfare, the Vermont Sheltered Workshop, the Vermont Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (AHPER), the New England Tuberculosis Conference, The Converse Home of Burlington, the Governor's Committee on Youth Fitness, and the Burlington Public Welfare Commission. The Burlington First Baptist Church was an integral part of his life. Over 60 years of membership, he was actively involved in many different boards at the church. He also participated in a number of state-level boards, including being President of the Vermont Baptist Men for several years.

June 2, 2016TURNER - Marshall C. Bates, 91, of Turner, died at his home on Saturday May 28, 2016. He was born in Turner on August 24, 1924.
He graduated from Leavitt Institute and shortly after was drafted into the US Army and served his country with pride during World War II. He spent the remainder of his life following his passion for farming. He was a charter member of both the Maine Angus Association and the Maine Beef Producers Association. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and cherished time spent with his family. He was an amazingly generous, hardworking and loving man.
He is survived by his six children,daughters, Esther Yoder of Athens, Ga., Cyndy Merrick and husband Connie of Buckfield, Merri Baillargeon and husband Moe of Fryeburg, his sons, Rusty and wife Brenda of Clinton, Ken and wife Donna of Turner, Patrick and wife Yvette of Turner; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Billie Bates; his parents; siblings; and a great-grandson.
