Electa Ann McLain

Portland Press Herald (ME)

Well into her 90s, Electa ''Lecky'' Brown was still good with numbers.

Mrs. Brown, who died Monday at age 99, was the bursar at what is now the University of Southern Maine's Gorham campus. She was responsible for the student accounts and managed the funds that came to the campus.

''You didn't graduate if you owed her money,'' said her niece Louise Cross of Gorham. ''All the money passed through her hands before it was deposited in the bank. Her accounts balanced every time.

''She was very good at what she did,'' Cross said. ''She could do money into her 90s. The students loved her, and many kept in touch with her over the years.''

Mrs. Brown worked at the Gorham campus for 33 years and retired in 1976. Cross said she was respected by the faculty and loved by the campus community.

She lived in the neighborhood across the street from two fraternities, Phi Mu Delta and Tau Kappa Epsilon. Cross said that every year, she invited members to her home for coffee and muffins.

''The pledges would rake her leaves and plow her driveway. It was so cool. If the music was too loud and she called them, they turned it off. If Mrs. Brown called, they shut it down,'' Cross said. ''Tau Kappa Epsilon made her a TKE Sweetheart. She got a plaque.''

In August 1950, she married Philip A. Brown, who was her husband for 32 years. Cross said her aunt and uncle had a great life together and enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Horse Island in Little Sebago Lake.

Cross said her aunt spent summers there until she was in her 90s.

''The buildings are still the same as they were in the 1930s. There was no electricity. We did puzzles, played games and took walks. It was a step back in time,'' Cross said.

Mrs. Brown was an active member of the community and her church, First Parish Congregational Church UCC, where she held an office nearly every year since 1927. About five years ago, she founded ''The Originals,'' which gave senior citizens a social outlet.

She also was a charter member of the Gorham Historical Society, and was a Camp Fire leader in Gorham for more than 50 years.

Cross said she believed in creating positive opportunities and did whatever she could to help.

''She loved working with young people,'' Cross said.

1921-2010

SOUTH HADLEY - Clayton, or "Jack," as he preferred, was born in Gorham, ME, the youngest of seven, to George and Susan Dennison Brown.

He received his Bachelors Degree in Science from Gorham Normal School and his Masters Degree in Education from New York University. He was a decorated WWII veteran, serving with the Army Air Corps in Italy in the 454th Bombardment Unit. After the war, he became an Industrial Arts teacher, a career he would continue for 34 years. He and his wife, Shirley, lived in four states through the years. Wherever he lived he left a legacy of finely-crafted work, not only in his own homes, but also in the churches he attended, and the schools where he taught. The four-bedroom family "camp" he built on a Maine island is a testament to his talent. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, shuffleboard, and boating. He sang tenor in his church choir. Mostly, though, he enjoyed dancing with his wife. His family will always remember how he could dance! He was a Mason of Deering Lodge in Portland, ME, and served a year as District Deputy Worthy Grand Patron, Order of the Eastern Star, State of New York. He met his Lord peacefully on July 30th.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley, of South Hadley, MA; his daughter Susan Lastowski and her husband, Robert of Holyoke, MA; his son Tom Brown and his wife, Diane, of Milford, NH; his daughter Peggy Martin and her husband, Stephen of Amity, ME; his nine grandchildren Joe, Tim and Alyson Lastowski; Katie Wright and Keith Brown; Eryn, Heather, Kyle and Shannon Martin; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends that stretch from Maine to Florida.

Shirley A. Raynard

Portland Press Herald (ME)

Shirley R. Brown 1924-2012 HOLYOKE, Mass. -- Shirley took her last breath on Earth and her first breath in Heaven on this past Monday.

Born in Portland, she graduated from Farmington State Teacher's College and began a long career as a Home Economics teacher.

She met her husband Jack, on a blind date. They were married for 60 years before he was called home in 2010. Shirley was a wonderful, popular teacher.

Students sought out her classes because she poured so much of life's lessons into them. She started New York's first high school gourmet class for young men. It was an astounding success. She was an avid entertainer. Parties included fancy table favors, sumptuous hors d'ouerves and of course, party games. She was a soprano in her church choir and a member of the mission society. She ran the second-hand shop in the church and, as a retired teacher, joined Florida's literacy project. Shirley and Jack enjoyed world travel, ballroom dancing, and each other's company. But most important to both of them was their family. They summered every year at the family camp in Maine.

She leaves behind her daughter Susan Lastowski and her husband Robert of Holyoke, her son Tom Brown and his wife, Diane of Milford, NH, her daughter Peggy Martin and her husband Steve of Amity, ME.; 14 grandchildren, Joe, Niki, Tim, Alyson, Pete, Katie, Tony, Keith, Eryn, Troy, Heather, Kyle, Paige, and Shannon; three great-grandchildren, Ivy, Kaylei, and Samantha; and many nieces, nephews and friends, including her loving caregivers at Loomis House.

75307. Harry Haskell Hergert

The Free Lance-Star (Fredericksburg, VA)
November 30, 2012

Harry Haskell Hergert Sr. was born Oct. 15, 1919, in San Francisco to Russell and Alberta Hergert.

He was an only child and quite intelligent. He went to the University of California at Berkeley and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1941. He then attended Harvard University and received a Master of Business Administration degree in 1947. He met his wife, Nancy Keene, there.

They lived in Darien, Conn., and had three children, Harry Jr., Nancy, known as "Muffin," and William. Harry was an eccentric person who was very interested in antiques. When he bought a historical monument, a home built in 1776 on two acres with a clay tennis court, his dreams became a reality. He lived in the home for 50 years. Tennis became his favorite pastime. He and his wife played doubles with another couple, playing an annual tournament and engraving the names of the winning couple onto a trophy each year. He felt he had everything he could possibly want. Harry worked for his entire career as a comptroller for American Electric Power in New York City, commuting on the train every day until he retired.

He was primarily a vegetarian but loved seafood. He loved working in New York City because of the variety of food venues he could enjoy, Indian and Thai foods being his favorites. His interest in other countries resulted in his family traveling to Europe many times, because they loved the museums, culture and ambiance it offered. Venice was Harry's favorite place in the world.

He lost his beloved wife to cancer in 1987. After living alone in Darien for many years, he moved to Virginia in 1995, to be closer to his daughter-in-law, Susan Stonehill. He gave her the ultimate compliment, trusting that she would care for him, with the help of her daughters, Tamis and Carissa.

In July 2005 he moved into Chancellor's Village Retirement Community. While he was not happy at first, he grew to be very comfortable there. He passed away Nov. 8, 2012. He was 93 years old.

He was a kind man who was very grateful for the care and attention he received. He valued the simple things in life and was independent in spirit. He will be missed.

Harry H. Hergert is survived by his daughter, Nancy Hurd; and seven grandchildren, Tamis Davis, Carissa Hergert, Jacqueline Hergert, Lisa Walker, Tina Delawter, Bo Hurd and Brooks Hurd. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Calen Cooper, Lourdes and Madeline Davis, Kendra Delawter and Boden and Myles Walker.
