May 24, 1992Marie "Mia" Antionette Haskell, 68, who escaped oppression in Europe during and after World War II, died Wednesday in the Mount Prospect home of her daughter, Margaret Mullenix.
She died "after years of breathing difficulties and heart problems related to emphysema," her daughter said.
Mrs. Haskell was born in Klatovy, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Count Klement and Countess Maria Anna Korff Schmising Kerssenbrock.
During the war, she was imprisoned in a slave labor camp. The Nazis jailed her because her father, a Czech soldier, refused to allow his two sons to serve in the German army.
While in the camp, Mrs. Haskell repaired German aircraft parts. "She used to tell how she welded parts, and as soon as the Germans turned their backs she'd break them," said her daughter. "She had a lot of guts."Once liberated by the Allies, Mrs. Haskell worked as a translator for the underground and resistance forces in her native land. In 1949, she fled across the mountains to Austria to escape arrest by the Communists.
Mrs. Haskell came to this country a year later, with the help of a necessary student visa and a scholarship to attend Barat College. While attending the Lake Forest school, she spent summers giving lectures for Radio Free Europe and the Crusade for Freedom.
In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a special bill, sponsored by a Minnesota politician, that gave her permanent residency. But it took 39 years for her to become a U.S. citizen.
Between raising a family with her husband, Roy, and her illnesses, she never found the time to become a citizen. In 1991, her family made the arrangements. With the help of U.S. Sen. Paul Simon's (D-Ill.) office and the Immigration and Naturalization Service, she became a citizen while hospitalized in Lake Forest Hospital. "Mia said that becoming a United States citizen was one of the happiest moments of her life," said her daughter.Other survivors include four sons, Clement, Arthur, Jan and Nicholas; a sister, Gabriella Lobkovicz, and five grandchildren.

SSDI records a George Dickinson: b Sep 10, 1904, in Ohio; d March, 1983, in Punta Gorda, Florida.
He name is given in family records as Phyana Dewey Hulbert Haskell. In the family bible of Julia Ann (Hulbert) Haskell her birthdate is recorded as 29 April 1874 and her name as Anna Hulbert Haskell.
No record of Allen Carpenter's parents has become available, however his mother is recorded as a guest, as "Mrs. A. H. Williams" at his wedding to Phyana Haskell on June 29, 1904, in Ashtabula, Ohio. Allen's brother, James Williams Carpenter was the groom's best man at the wedding. On the basis of this scanty information, it is assumed that Mrs. Williams resumed (or kept) her maiden name.
