74559. Florence Gertrude Young

CORINTH - Florence Gertrude Young Sodermark, wife of the late Halvard Sodermark, passed away July 28, 2004, at the age of 99. She was born Oct. 2, 1904, in Milo. A resident of Corinth since 1913, she was the holder of the Boston Post Cane awarded to the oldest citizen. Florence was the daughter of William Melvin Young and Florence Jennie Megquier Young.

Florence graduated from East Corinth Academy in 1922 and was the sole surviving member of that class for many years.

Surviving are two children, James H. Sodermark and wife, Virginia, of Kenduskeag and Pauline Sodermark and husband, Linwood Greg Hildreth, of Corinth. Additionally she leaves four grandchildren, Valerie Knaut and husband, Frank, Sherry Swan and husband, Marc, Vicki Sodermark, Sandra Keith and husband, John; great-grandchildren, Jennifer and husband, Scott Hoenig, Jason Knaut, Miranda Moulton, Melissa Moulton, Jesse Keith and Megan Keith; great-great-grandchildren, James F. Sodermark and Brianna Esten; other surviving relatives, Alice Kinney, Elbie Nutter, Edna Hunt, Thomas Young, Patricia Brown, Annette Sawyer, and Ruth Sawyer.


46717. Mabel Gertrude Megquier

Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon from the Moody Funeral Chapel for Mabel Gertrude Girrell who passed away Dec. 30, at the age of 87 years.

Mrs. Girrell was a native of Pittsfield, Maine, where she was born Sept. 1, 1964. She had lived in Plumas County for about 32 years. She made her home with her daughter Mrs. Ray Mulleague after the latter's marriage, except for the times when she acted as a cook for the Forest Service and other large concerns. She had been in poor health for many years though her death was a direct result of a fall in her home Dec. 26 when three ribs were broken and the shock was too much for her frail constitution.

Five daughters survive, her only son John Girrell passed away about four years ago. The daughters are Mrs. Jennie Marble of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Inez Scott of Massack, Mrs. Marian Girrell also of Massack, Mrs. Lottie Franovich and Mrs. Mabel Mulleague of Quincy.

She also leaves seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

One grandson, Johnny Doane arrived Monday for the funeral.

Fryburg- James Hanscom, 64, of 23 Hillside Avenue, Metuchen, N.J., died suddenly in his home Wednesday morning.

He was born at Pencoke, N. J.

Mr. Hanscom was married to the former Olive Kapp of Venus, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Robert Neverett of Chazy, N.J.; a son Richard of Newburg, N.Y.; a brother, Edwin of Mariemont, Ohio; a sister, Prudence Breckenridge of Mariemont, Ohio. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.

GUILFORD - Alfred W. Race, 80, died Feb. 17, 1982 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. He was born in Guilford, Oct. 31, 1901, the son of Walter and Laura (Hutchins) Race.

He had been in the grocery business most of his life and owned and operated Race's Market in Guilford for over 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Fowler) Race of Guilford; one son, Roger of Plattsburg, NH; one sister, Mrs. Myrl (Dorothy) Howard of Parkman; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren

LEOMINSTER - Harold C. Haskell, formerly of 68 Grant St., died Saturday night in Birchwood Care Center, 1199 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg, after a long illness.

His wife, Cecile Y. (Bergeron) Haskell, died in 1985. He leaves a brother, Norman Haskell of Spartanburg, S.C.; and several nephews and nieces. He was born in Houlton, Maine, son of John A. and Grace (Palmer) Haskell, and lived here most of his life before moving to Fitchburg recently. He studied the piano at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

Mr. Haskell was a shipper at Miles Kedex Co. for many years before he retired. He previously worked at the former Du Pont Co. He was a member of Leominster United Methodist Church and the Writers Club of America. He wrote several poems, short stories and plays thast were published in national magazines and was a pianist for the Fitchburg Retired Men's Chorus. He was also a member and past president of the Hobby Crafters Club, and the Leominster and Shrewsbury Square-Dance clubs.

Doris Eileen (Haskell) Johnson died 15 December 1989 in Centerville, MA. She was born 27 July 1917 in Caribou, ME., a daughter of John Alfred and Grace (Palmer) Haskell. She married Jamed Edwin Johnson in 1937 and he survives her.

She also leves four children: James Walter Haskell of College Corner, OH, Linda Louise Edwards of Acton, MA, Brian Edwin Johnson of Redington Beach, FL, and David Alan Johnson of Fairport, N.Y. and seven grandchildren.
