SOUTH PORTLAND -- Richard 'Dick' E. Cousins, 85, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.

Dick was born on June 21, 1929, in Westbrook, the son of Robert E. Cousins and Ethel M. Berry. He grew up in Morrill's Corner in Portland, and graduated from Deering High School, class of 1947.

Dick was employed by the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram for 46 years. He began his career slinging newspapers from the back of the delivery trucks. From there, he moved into the mailroom, then to district manager overseeing a group of paper boys/girls, to eventually becoming circulation manager. He spent his entire career with the newspaper's owner, Guy Gannett Publishing. He then worked for Prime Motors from 1996 to 2011.

Dick was a veteran serving his country in the Army from 1951-1953, and rose to the rank of corporal in two years. He was an active member in the South Portland community. He was a member of the S.P. Lions Club, and served as its president in 1976-1977. He was a member of the Elks, a participant in the 'Right to Read' program, and he also served six years on the South Portland Civil Service Commission.

He enjoyed umpiring Little League games for several years and was involved with the Farm League and the Red Riots. One of his proudest accomplishments was being named president of the New England Newspaper Executives Association in 1991. He was elected by his peers from newspapers all over New England.

Dick loved the Patriots and Red Sox and golf. Although Dick took up the game of golf late in life, he became an avid golfer, and a member of Willowdale Golf Course.

Dick was a kind man and always a gentleman who loved people and life.

Dick was predeceased by his brothers, Ronald Cousins, Robert Cousins and Dana Cousins.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Eleanor M. Cousins; their two sons, Richard Cousins of Portland, and David Cousins and his wife Jean of South Portland; his granddaughter, Dayna Cousins of Los Angeles, Calif., his grandson, Jackson Cousins of South Portland; cousin, Randall White and his wife Joyce; along with 16 nieces and nephews.

GROVE - Funeral service for Ronald E. Cousins, 69, who died Monday, May 21, 2001 at his home in Grove, were Thursday, May 24, at 11:00 a.m. at Lanman Funeral Home Chapel in Cherokee with Pastor Ed Jones officiating.

Burial followed at Auburn Cemetery southwest of Cherokee. Arrangements were by Lanman Funeral Home of Cherokee.

He was born in Portland, Maine on December 1, 1931, the son of Robert Earl and Ethel Mae Berry Cousins. On May 11, 1952 he and Carol White were married in Cherokee. They lived in Wichita, Kan. where he was a retired Wichita Police Detective Lieutenant, and also retired from Boeing Aircraft. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Grove; one son, Ronald D. Cousins, of Grove; one daughter, Caron Dumler, of Erie, Pa.; his mother-in-law, Orvella White, of Grove, formerly of Cherokee; one brother, Richard E. Cousins, of South Portland, Maine and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Cousins, and one brother, Ronald B. Cousins.

Robert B. Cousins, 62, of Portland died Thursday at his residence.

He was born here, a son of Robert E. and Ethel M. Berry Cousins, and graduated from Deering High School.

From 1955 to 1957, Mr. Cousins served in the Army with a military police unit, and retired from the Army Reserve.

For 22 years he was a police officer with the Portland Police Department, retiring in 1979.

He was a 32nd-degree member of Cornerstone Masonic Lodge, a member of the Elks, the Harold T. Andrews Post of the American Legion, the Amvets and the VFW.

Surviving are two brothers, Richard of South Portland and Ronald E. of Wichita, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

GORHAM - S. Natalie Armstrong, 74, died Saturday June 18, 2016, at her home in Gorham. She was born Jan. 4, 1942, in Gorham, a daughter of Clarence and Ida (Cousens) James.

Natalie grew up in Gorham and attended local schools. She had a great work ethic and enjoyed careers at Graybar Electric, W.T. Grants, Sylvania, Fairchild, and Unum from where she retired in 1998.

She enjoyed painting, bowling, beano, casinos, dancing, and crocheting. Natalie was also a member of the fraternal order of Eagles and Elks lodge #188.

In addition to her parents Natalie was predeceased by her husband of 52 years Lester Armstrong; sister, Carol Plummer, brothers, Clarence James, Jr. and Edward James; and granddaughter Lily Armstrong.

She is survived by her children, Brent Armstrong and his wife Kathy of Greene, Todd Armstrong and his wife Nancy of Naples, Holly Sirois of New Hampshire, and Carissa Bucklin and her husband Eric of Florida; grandchildren, Brent II, Lacey, Jessica, Brandon, Matthew, Jaymie, Shelby, Dallas, Rebecca, and Gracie; great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Danika, Kayden, Phlisity, and Riley; and her sister, Barbara Nevers.

GORHAM -- Lester H. Armstrong, 76, died on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1937, in Machias, the son of Millard and Emily (Harriman) Armstrong.

Lester grew up in South Portland and was a 1957 graduate of South Portland High School. Following school Lester served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1962. After his military service Lester enjoyed a 42 year career with the H.P. Hood Company as a transportation supervisor.

He was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 565, Portland Elks Lodge 188, and the American Legion Post 62 of Westbrook.

Lester had many enjoyments in life including hunting, fishing, woodworking, bowling, and most of all time with his family.

Lester is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, S. Natalie (James) Armstrong; children, Brent James Armstrong and fiance Kathy Venskus of Greene, Holly Beth Sirois of Newport, N.H., Carissa May Bucklin and husband Eric of Tallahassee, Fla., and Todd Bradshaw Armstrong and wife Nancy of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; brothers, Millard Leroy Armstrong of Hazelgreen, Ala., and Albert Allen Armstrong of Gorham; grandchildren, Brent, Lacey, Jessica, Jaymie, Brandon, Matthew, Shelby, Dallas, Rebecca and Grace; and great-grandchildren, Danika, Kayden and Nevaeh.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Lily Armstrong.

Ralph Haley, 75, of Rt. 112, died Thursday, at a local hospital after complications from heart surgery.

He was born here, a son of Stephen and Bertha McLellan Haley, and graduated from the former Buxton High School in 1939.

Mr. Haley worked in construction for many years and was the clerk of the works on many jobs throughout Maine, including Bonny Eagle High School.

He was predeceased in 1992 by a son, Larry.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Clara Libby Haley, and one son, Ronald, both of Buxton; three daughters, Patricia Davis of Buxton, Roberta Nelson of Hollis and Julie Chandler of Westbrook; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Rose Haskell Chapman, 84, of Main Street, Ivoryton, died Sunday evening at Middlesex Memorial Hospital. The wife of Luther C. Chapman, she was a lifelong Ivoryton resident.

She was born in Ivoryton Aept. 23, 1876, a daughter of Charles and Edith Munn Haskell. She was a deaconess; a charter member of Beacon Light Circle of the King's Daughter; a member of Baldwin Chapter, OES and Pettipaug Court, Order of Amaranth.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Burton Chapman of Natick, Mass; a daughter, Mrs. Elliot Carter of Chester; five grabdchildren, three great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Marguerite Shannon and Mrs. Sarah Parmalee of Ivoryton, and Mrs. Raymond Post of Westbrook; two brothersa, Henry Haskell of Ivoryton and Caswell of Centerbrook; several nieces and nephews.

R. Gilbert Shannon, 93, of Cromwell, formerly of Stancliff Road, Glastonbury, husband of the late Viola Decker Shannon, died Monday, (January 5, 2004) in the Glastonbury Health Center.

Born in Beaver Falls, PA, son of the late Royal G. Shannon and Marguerite Haskell Shannon, he lived in Glastonbury for over 60 years, moving to Cromwell about two years ago.

He was educated in Pratt High School in Deep River and in Middletown Business College and worked as a Medical Lab Technician for Conn. General Life Insurance Co., now Cigna. He was an over 50 year member of the Daskam Columbia Lodge AF and AM of So. Glastonbury and a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, Glastonbury and former member of the Conn. General Club.

He leaves his two sons, Roy G. and his wife, Peruelia Shannon and Robert D. and his wife, Janet Shannon both of Glastonbury; five grandchildren, Lisa, Michael, Leslie, Denise and Christine; and a great-grandchild. F

Marie Shannon of Main Street, Centerbrook section of Essex, died Monday at Gladeview Health Care Facility in Old Saybrook. She was 80.

She was a longtime resident of Ivoryton and was a member of the Ivoryton Congregational Church. In the early to mid-'50s, she was the local reporter for the Middletown Press and the New Era in Deep River. In the late '50s, she was the librarian for the Ivoryton Library and later owned a ceramic studio. She was president of the Church Women United of the Lower Connecticut Valley from 1978-80.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas Shannon of Kensington and Daniel Shannon of Vista, Calif.; a sister, Frances H. Pianta of Old Saybrook; and a granddaughter.

Barbara Stebbins, age 97, passed away following a brief illness early Sunday morning, (August 4, 2013), at Chesterfields Health Care Center in Chester. She was the loving wife of 77 amazing years to William Stebbins, also residing at Chesterfields.

Born on January 25, 1916 in Ivoryton and where she resided most her life, she was the daughter of the late Sarah (Haskell) Parmelee and Burdette Parmelee.

Besides her beloved husband William she leaves her three sons, Donald, of Deep River, David of Nokomis, FL, and Richard, of Essex. She was grandmother to, Donna, Terri, Sonny, Marcia, Sarah, Timothy, Kelly and Bethany; and great-grandmother to, Todd, Eric, Ashley, Logan, Kyle, Jake, Elizabeth and Madison.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Barbara (Parmelee) Stebbins, who he was married to for 77 years.

Born on March 25, 1915 in Old Saybrook, he resided most of his life in Ivoryton, and was the son of the late Arthur and Edith (Newton) Stebbins.

William leaves his three sons, Donald, of Deep River, David of Florida, and Richard, of Essex. He was grandfather to; Donna, Terri, Sonny, Marcia, Sarah, Timothy, Kelly and Bethany, and great-grandfather to; Todd, Eric, Ashley, Kyle, Logan, Jake, Elizabeth and Madison. He also leaves a sister Betty Vanzandt of Vermont and was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Frye and Helen Stevenson.

Dorothy Denison Ely, formerly of Centerbrook, died Jan. 7 at a hospice facility in Ocala, Fla. She was 95.

Born in Hartford, she had worked as a secretary at Cramer Co. in Centerbrook, Essex Elementary School and Pratt Read Co. in Ivoryton.

She is survived by a son, Caswell Haskell Jr. of Saluda, N.C.; four grandchildren; and several stepchildren.

Mr. Haskell was born May 5, 1928 in Ivoryton, CT, and had been a resident of Ocean Springs, MS for 21 years. He was a life member of the Amateur Radio Club and a 32nd Degree Mason.

He worked on the Coast at Mavar's in Biloxi as an electrician and at Samaritan House in Ocean Springs. He was a veteran with 20 years of service plus reserve time in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy (Seabees). He served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley E. Haskell of Belleville, Michigan; a son, Timothy Haskell of Belleville, Michigan; a daughter, Gail Delancey of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; a brother and sister-in-law, Caswell Haskell of Old Lyme, Connecticut; his mother, Mrs. R.B. Ely of Ocala, Florida; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She  was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie C. Haskell; and her daughter, Gail A Brewer.

Shirley is survived by her son, Timothy W. Haskell (Teresa); and four grandchildren.

George Haskell, 28, of 411 Carew street, former marine corps corporal, injured Wednesday in an automobile accident at Manchester, Ct., died early yesterday in Manchester Memorial hospital. Death, a hospital spokesman said, was caused by a broken neck and fractured skull.

State Policeman John Ring said the accident occurred when the right rear tire of Haskell's car blew out, causing him to lose control. The car crashed into a utility pole and Haskell was thrown clear of the vehicle.

He leaves a widow, Mrs. Jane Haskell; a daughter, Susan Jane, 3 ½; his father, Clifford C. Haskell; two brothers, Norman J. and Clifford C. Jr.; two aunts and several nieces and nephews.
